I understand that bioengineering is a difficult major, but just how much times does it consume? I am planning on going to Med school, but just in case I didn't want to go to college for another four years, I wanted to pick a major that is more versitile than biology (where you can pretty much only be a researcher or teacher without further education). Bioengineering would be perfect because I love math and science and I think I would enjoy constructing things like artificial organs, etc. I keep hearing horror stories on how much everyone hates engineering and how hard it is and it's making me nervous. I am a super-overachiever and I am planning on going through an honors program in addition to engineering, because I like to be challenged outside the classroom and I do not want to be in a general english class, etc. If that wasn't enough, I am also a very committed athlete, and I am planning on running cross country in college (which also entails indoor and outdoor track). I am not an amazing runner, so I don't know if i'll get to travel that much at a D1 school, but I am good enough to have the opportunity if I work hard enough. The cross country team is full of science and engineering majors, so I will be in good company.
So my question is... is trying to pursue this and keep a high GPA crazy and impossible?! Throughout high school, I have taken the hardest courses in a very difficult school (all APs this year, except one honors), maintained a 4.0 uw, while participating in 3 varisty sports, various clubs, and volunteering. The thing is that I am probably not as naturally smart as a lot of the engineers (only 30 ACT); i just work my a** off. Should i try to pursue an easier engineering major (is mechanical easier?), choose a totally different major, or drop honors (which i really dont want to do--scholarship attached). I really don't want to quit running...
omigosh, sorry for the super-long post, but if anyone has any info/suggestions, i would GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks so much!

hmm, if you love it, you will succeed at -- it no matter how hard it is.

bioe doesn't have to be any more difficult than any other engineering program it depends on the school. Which school are you going to? Do you know what the curriculum looks like? How much traditional engineering is involved? is it bioe or bioMEDICALe ?

It is bioengineering. I am planning on going to the University of South Carolina, which is not really too known for their engineering, but i know there are a ton of labs and it is pretty time consuming. I don't know what the course looks like though. I know the honors program there is challenging. I am also considering Clemson, which is widely known for their engineering programs and is pretty rigorous. I am just getting nervous about how much i am laying on my plate freshman year...i have seen a lot of people post on this forum about how hard engineering is. Thanks for replying! I am amazed on how many people take the time to try to thoroughly answer other's posts.

It really depends on how much time you need to understand the material. Some engineering students pick up on concepts quickly and spend less time.
