Hi,

I am currently finishing up my third undergraduate semester as a Bioengineering major and am almost certain that I will eventually want to apply to medical school. I am taking this summer to catch up (I had to take a medical withdrawal in the Fall due to health reasons), but I am starting to think about options for next summer so that I can get a head start looking for opportunities.

As a member of the honors program at my university I will eventually take several courses outside of the basic curriculum which will include six credit hours (over two semesters) of mentored research as well as preparation and presentation of a senior thesis. There are many professors involved in this program with a wide array research topics, so I am sure that I will be able to find something that interests me and is also related to the medical field. I know that doing some type of medical research is highly recommended for students who are considering applying to medical school, but have been unable to find any information on whether or not there is a certain amount at which it stops helping your chances for med school acceptance.

My question is this: Would it be better for me to look for an opportunity to conduct more research (on another topic) or to vary my resume by interning with a doctor in a field that I am interested in (specifically an anesthesiologist).
