Biology 117 and 118

How difficult are these two classes? On ACES, it shows that these two are taught by Paul Magwene/Fred Nihjout (for 117) and Mitchell-Olds/Haase (for 118). Anybody have any positives/negatives about these profs or tips on how to do well?

I have heard good things about Mitchell-Olds/Haase but I took bio118 with Spana/Sun this past semester. All I can say is if you take that class, make sense to keep up with the readings and lectures because you can't afford to slack off, even for a day.

Thanks. Did you find the book to be very useful? I took a couple of the intro classes and the book was pretty useless, IMO.

The book covers the material in much more detail than the lecture. I didn't really pay much attention in lecture because I fell asleep a lot. So I basically just read the book. IMO, the giant red book is too much info. I got by almost exclusively reading from the white Griffiths book. The only exception is the cell cycle and its regulation, the white book doesn't have a chapter on that.

I took 118 this fall and thought it was pretty difficult. Then again, I have the worst study habits ever and didn't attend most of Sun's worthless lectures.

So does anyone know what Bio 117 tests are like? Memorization oriented or critical thinking?

117 is generally harder than 118, but it depends on the teacher

^ Are you serious? Why do you think it's harder than 118 (btw, I have Nihjout & Magwene)?

"Take Bio 118 in the Spring," that's what I've heard. Which is why I'm taking it this semester. Don't really know about 117, is it better than 119 ( the second part to 118 supposedly)? I am a non-bio major pre-med looking for more upper-bio classes to take.
