To those who have taken Bio 1A at cal,

Is the class curved like a regular science course? (20% A, 30% B, ....) or is it graded on a straight scale?

Is the class curved like a regular science course? (20% A, 30% B, ....) or is it graded on a straight scale?

all large classes are curved.

Dunno about 1A
I asked my Bio 1B GSI today, he said only the lab portion of the grade is curved. The midterms and the finals aren't. ****

Maybe it was 1b that was curved.

1a was pretty easy so maybe it wasnt curved.

I took bio 1B last semester. Exams are not curved. The lab score is curved so that the average is an 85%. Don't expect the lab score to help you unless you are fine with getting a B or C for the course.

I know for bio 1A that if you get atleast a 90% you get some kind of A, 80% some kind of B, and so forth. The question is, will the cutoffs be readjusted so that overall 20% of the class gets As, 30% gets Bs, etc... if there are less than the usual number of people getting a certain letter grade?

They do curve slightly depending on the test scores. Fall 2005 Bio 1B had a really low mean on the final (ecology portion). It was poorly written and had stupid questions. You can generally expect an A to be around 87-88.

I remember that exam. Dr. Powers' ecology section right?

Yeah...a lot of people's grades dropped after that final. I hated those super-detailed questions off some random slide on her stupid Powerpoint lectures. They don't have set percentages that they give each letter, but if only 10% of students are in the 90-100 range, they will move the cutoffs down.

I really wish that the final grade will be prorated.......sigh, I just need something to make me feel better. I got a freaking C+ on that easy first midterm. ****, I just can't do well on MC exams.....

ok....I am done whining. excuse me a bit
