my friend and i did pretty bad on the first two midterms but we're wondering if it's possible to get a C- at least? do they not pass people or is it like physics 8a where they give a c- minimum? please help! im planning to study like crazy for the final but after my performance from the past, idk how much better i would do.

help. my lab grade is about 75% and the class is curved to a 85% for LAB. so how much would that help me?

it depends on how well ur lab is doing. if the lab average for ur class is 90% then ur in a bad position but if the lab average for your class is 75% then you will get 85%. Most likely the section average is around 85% already so that 75% looks pretty bad…

Okay, well I guess if I get a C or higher, and do about the same on the midterm/final, then I can pass the class right?

any more answers?

i am hesitant to respond to you, clueless, considering your reputation on this site, but i too am in 1b and here’s what i know: this sem they’re curving lab to 87%. in years past i’ve heard the ecology part of the final is killer but it’s all relative to how others do. i know someone who got a c- on the final but an A in the class cause the final was just that hard and everyone else did crappy too. my lab for example is super hard and most people routinely get about 70% on tests and stuff. so the kids that get around 75% will probably end up with 90%s. at the end.

wow. our lab is pretty smart and the quizzes are pretty easy so the average is pretty high i’d say. okay that leaves some hope for me. i’ve studied so much already for the ecology part and it seems relatively easy to understand now that i’ve gone through it a little more. i really need to pass this class. it would be unfortunate to have to retake it in the summer.

^^ actually, you want to be in a harder section for bio 1b because they curve you down from what i remember…

get into a high-performing section for bio 1al though (friday ones). it will save your ass. (i did not realize this until after the second lab practical sadly)

what? i’m so confused. well the semester is almost over sooo…lol but how would you know which one is high-performing? we only had one practical.

but i’m thinking if i just get a B on either the midterm (or final) then it will make up for my D. and then I would pass with a C hopefully…? my lab grade is a C and my 2nd midterm.

Lab GSIs are required to maintain a 85% average. If the average score in the lab section is above 85% everyone’s grade will be curved DOWN. In 2009 my section had a 93% average because the quizzes and labs were graded too leniently. If you were at 93% that was a ‘B’ grade, people at 84% received a ‘C’ grade, and so forth.

If you’re in a hard section that has an avg less than 85% you get curved UP to reach the 85% mandate.

You can ask your GSI what the current average is, or just compare quiz scores to other people.

okay thanks i asked her and she said she doesn’t know what the curve is. but that’s different than ur statement. whatever. it doesn’t matter. i’m not dropping the course now with a late drop. i’m just hoping to pass it cause 5 hours a day sounds like hell over the summer when i could be taking fun classes.
