Biology/Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2008

True - I usually say UW-Madison for Wisconsin, since it has other campuses that are also relatively high profile, while UW-Seattle is the only Washington campus that really stands out. I meant UWashington when I said UW. And by the way, I wish Wisconsin would call... but I don't think CMB gets back to people until the second half of January usually.

Does anyone know how to edit signatures? I looked in the options to edit my profile and I didn't see it.

layne, i applied to CMDB (although i actually meant to apply to BCMB, got those two mixed up) and the interview is Feb 15, same as yale BBS.

nickalternate, i heard back from UM PiBS a couple days before christmas, but i think rounds of invites vary between which PiBS dept you listed.

Thanks and congrats dd, maybe I'll hear back soon too.

Odd thing happened today (Jan 9) I get an email from a prof. on the admissions committee for Columbia's pathobiology saying they needed my GRE scores, so I send them to him, no problem. Then I realize his email was written Dec 23. Like many of you all, I check my email like crazy, so I know his letter got to me today, not earlier. Since he seems to have written over 2 weeks ago, the admissions committee must have already met and made decisions - anybody have any advice on this or similar experiences?

Anxiously awaiting UCB and UW

Applied: UCSF (BMS), UCB (MCB), UW (MCB), WUSTL (DBBS), UCSD (BMS), OHSU, UPENN, Columbia, UNC-CH, UChicago, Northwestern, UT-Austin, TSRI
Accepted:

Interviews: UNC-CH (called 1/9), OHSU (PCMB email 1/7), WashU (Int. on 2/7)
Rejected:UCSF(BMS) 1/7/08 email.

Is UCB contacting people, autocell? I figured they didn't send their decisions until at least the 15th.

Question - is it absolutely gauche to wear dark/black jeans to an interview?

...I only have one pair of slacks, and my skirts are not exactly business casual (bright yellow, big floral prints, or polka dots).

At least I know enough to leave my Carhartts at home.

i think it depends on what the jeans look like- although its obviously not ideal. Definitely bring jeans with you as most places have you going out with the first and second years, so youd what to dress more casual for that. khakis or cords seem like a better bet

I also wouldn't see anything wrong with wearing the skirts -- nobody's asking you to dress only in black and navy blue for interviews. My interview skirt was tan with blue flowers on it.

Honestly, your clothes are not something to worry so much about for interviews. I could not forsee a situation in which what you were wearing actually caused you to be rejected from a program. Just wear what you think is appropriate on your first interview, and if you have interviews after that, you'll figure out what you feel that you should wear. It's not the same for everybody.

Heard back from Yale yesterday!

Applied: MIT, Harvard (MCB and BBS), Yale (MCBGD), Stanford (Bio), Rockefeller, Hopkins

Interviews:

Accepted: Yale (MCBGD)

Has anyone heard from Biomedical Sciences (BMS) at UPenn yet?

Vas - I heard back and have an interview with the Cell and Molecular Biology track of UPenn BMS, but it definitely looks like the invites are being done by department, not for the whole program at once. It's still early, the deadline was less than a month ago.

Has anyone heard from UCSD (BMS)?

yay just got an email from stanford genetics

Applied: Harvard (HILS-Genetics and Systems), MIT (Genetics), Rockefeller, Stanford (Genetics, Biochem, Cancer Biology), UCSF (Tetrad), Berkeley (MCB), UWashington (Genomics), NYU (Functional Genomics)

Acceptances: Rockefeller (12/21)

Interviews: UW (1/08), Stanford (Genetics) 1/10

Well, I finally heard from Yale - I got an e-mail congratulating me on the phone call I never received. :)

Is anyone else forced to make tough decisions yet? The recruitment weekend for Yale is Jan 31 to Feb 2nd... which is the exact same as the Chicago interview weekend I already agreed to go to, and even bought a plane ticket for.

I actually would much rather go to Yale than Chicago- but Chicago contacted me a month ago, when I thought I might not get in anywhere. Since I think I don't need to interview at Yale, it would probably be okay if I skipped the recruitment weekend. Still, I'm disappointed - Yale is one of the schools that I really wanted to get a chance to visit - and since I got in there, I'm nearly certain I don't want to go to Chicago. Meh.

Applied: UWashington (MCB), Yale (BBS-MCGD), UChicago (Mol. Biosciences), UW-Madison (CMB), NYU (FAS Biology), UOregon (Biology), Harvard (MCB), Indiana University (Biology), UC-Berkeley (MCB)
Accepted: Yale (notified by email 1/10)
Interviews: UChicago (e-mail 12/18), UWashington (phone 1/09)

If you don't want to go to a recruitment weekend, you don't have to go, even if they already bought you a plane ticket.

You also might ask both schools if they have alternate weekends -- most schools have two or three weekends, and it seems odd and foolish that a school would only have one weekend.

Hey buffkitten, I had to choose between Duke and UPenn. Although I chose Duke, I still want to interview at UPenn too. :)

I've based "tough decisions" about where to visit based on who contacted me first and on my proximity to the school, i.e. I'm skipping a visit to Johns Hopkins b/c I live in Maryland and I can easily visit and interview during the week. Of course that type of situation doesn't apply to everyone.

Just got a call from WUSTL (DBBS) at noon, telling that I am invited to the interview. Yesterday I sent an email to the program, asking if i am invited or not, then today they come.

Got an invite from UPenn today. Show me some love UW or UCB please!

I've asked for the RSVP deadline of my invites if not stated and will weigh my options in the next week or so before committing. If the deadline approaches before I hear back from my top choices I think it is best to just book the trip and decide later if I will go. They expect some to do this when they get better offers.

Is it a bad idea to interview at the later interviews dates? Are there less spots available at this point?

got an invite from UPenn today too!

Accepted from Northwestern Chem. Dept. Today.
