Biology/Biomedical Sciences Applicants 2008

I applied to the Pharmacology department. Some schools review their int'l applicants late, fyi.

RE: Harvard HBTM

I applied to this program and when I googled it last week I found an article from the Harvard student newspaper explaining how the program had been created. It also stated that the program was looking to have an incoming class of 6 (!) new students. I would never have applied if I knew it was so small. I also think that it will most likely be all MD/PhD students (this was not stated in the article, but is my opinion).

I think it would be nice if places would give you a rough idea of how many students they want to have in their incoming class (many places do).

I have also applied to USCF (TETRAD) and NYU (Cellular and Molecular Biology-Sackler Institute). Since I haven´t received an answer from them either, I sent an email asking for notifications. USCF said that I will receive a letter from them in March and NYU said that all decisions should be released by the end of February. Do you think I should assume that I have been rejected in any of these universities?

Thanks for telling me. Wish your interview goes well!

Hi!

I have also applied to the Harvard/HBTM program and haven't heard anything from them yet. I had no idea that this program is SO competitive (until I read your post, tvgradschool)...I think they should have made it clearer on their website...I'm curious if they sent their decisions, but there's no way to find out (I tried to email and call their office). Well, good luck with your interviews!

Anyone know about how big the Harvard BBS program is (# of students/incoming class)? Is it about 30-40 per class?

I think its closer to 60

Hi guys, Did anyone hear from UC Davis biophysics ? Also did anyone get a rejection letter from Stanford Biophysics?

Have any international students heard back from Harvard BBS yet? And if so, did they notify you by phone, mail, email, etc?

My class (now G2) was 70! But this year's G1 class has 47 members.

I think they aim for a class size around 50 or 60, but it depends on how many people accept their offer.

JHU School of Public Health

I have a question regarding the admission to JHU School of Public Health - Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program. My application status still appears as incomplete because they say my transcripts have been received but are being evaluated for authenticity and equivalence and no action is required by the applicant. Does anybody know if this process usually takes too long for international students? Does anybody know about the interview dates??

Finally got a rejection from Yale BBS-pharmacology. Really glad they had the decency to tell me this early. Updated status (hope it helps):

Interviewed, Accepted: UPenn (CAMB)

Interviews: Columbia (integrated program), Wisconsin (Biochem), Hopkins (Mol. Med., pharmcology), Weill-Cornell (pharmcacology, cell bio), Boston U. (arts/sciences biochem integrated program), Michigan (PIBS-pharmacology)

Invited, but declined: Maryland-College Park (CBMG)

Rejected: Yale (BBS-pharmacology)

No Word (assume rejected): Harvard (BBS-cell bio), Northwestern (evanston integrated program - IPiB)

anyone received the rejection from bbs-MCDGB?

upstairs, don't be sad, I think Penn medical school is no worse than Yale

I got an interview with NYU Sackler.

tzimonika - how did they let you know? Email? Phone call?

it was by email.

denny- I agree. Yeah it sounds like sour grapes from me right now, but Yale is largely a name. Lots and lots of people apply there for the name (and only the very top applicants make it in), but the science is so/so in all honesty. Harvard on the other hand has great science accross the board AND everyone applies there, so its selectivity is much more justified in my opinion. UPenn is my happy medium in the northeast.

I agree with nickalternate. I applied to yale and got accepted, and went to their recruitment weekend. It's a great school that emanates with a lot of history and culture, but I feel like I should be in law or journalism when I'm there. I personally wasn't too impressed with their research, but that may just be relevant to the field I'm interested in. I find it surprising how many people make judgments about the quality of the university without exploring the research interests of the faculty. And yes, Harvard is much much better than Yale, but then again, how many of us who got rejected from Yale would have been accepted at Harvard?

Oh, and someone above asked this: does harvard send out emails or packages. I've talked to a lot of people on interview weekends, and I'm fairly certain (i.e. I heard from a lot of people) that all calls were made a few weeks ago, and emails were sent out to those who were not available to answer the phone. Packages were also received sometime last week.
I haven't heard anything yet. I'm almost 100% certain that's a rejection.

Has anyone heard from UCSD (BMS) recently? I know a couple of people here heard from them a month ago.
