Biology major and Ecology option?

I am conflicted. I currently am a Biology major with a minor in chemistry. I am looking to add ecology as an option to my major. This would shift the general biology classes of the major to a more ecological focus. I am still unsure of ecology and don’t know if i should add the option. My reasoning being that the ecology option will actually limit my career options instead of broaden them. I am worried I will regret the ecology option due its lack of general biology courses. I do plan on going to grad school and am worried about how the ecology option will affect my future. However I am very interested in Biology and ecology because i enjoy science and love nature and wildlife. Any opinions?

I would suggest taking a class or two focused on ecology to get a feel for the ecology side of the biology major. I don’t know if it would limit your career options due to the fact that you are planning on going to grad school. What are you planning on going to grad school for or what do you think your concentration might be in the biological sciences? You could also go the route of an ecological focus while still taking other general biology classes on the side.

Exactly this. I was an “Ecology and Evolutionary Biology” major, but I still took many molecular biology courses even though it wasn’t required. I enjoyed my undergrad, but ended up going to grad school in a more molecular field.
