When contemplating which university I wanted to transfer to, I knew it had to have these important qualities: a good Biology department, strong undergraduate research opportunities, and a diverse and friendly environment that I could call home. Emory University has surpassed all of my expectations and become a perfect match. The fact that each student in the Biology department has their own unique career path gives students the ability to interact with a variety of people each day. I plan to take advantage of unique classes that this department offers, such as: Biology of the Eye, Epigenetics and Human Disease, and Building Brains. I believe that learning through experimentation is imperative, which is why I would like to perform independent research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I knew that reading about Emory and viewing statistics could only do so much, but that a final decision could be made after a visit to Emorys campus.

In August of 2012, I had the privilege of going to Atlanta for the first time, so I could see Emory University for myself. In an attempt to take full advantage of this trip, I scheduled a tour, an information session, and an advisor appointment. While listening to the excitement in our tour guides voice as she explained to us the history of Emory and everything that makes attending Emory a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the thought that kept running through my mind was, I could be her. I then met with Alexander Escobar, Assistant Dean and PreHealth Mentoring Office Director. What stuck out most to me during our conversation was the emphasis he put on the importance of learning beyond what is taught in the classroom. This was directly linked to the unique underlying theme of Emory that Ive noticed, which is to build on ones character as well as the mind. From the traditions such as, Dooleys Week and Wonderful Wednesdays to the feeling you get while out on the Quad or on the tenth floor of Robert W. Woodruff Library, I strongly believe that Emory University is, undoubtedly, the perfect fit for me.
