Biology majors at UCSC

Is UCSC good for biology (or related) majors? And how is Cognitive Science there?

Bio is excellent. There are a ton of research opportunities, for pay or otherwise. The department suffers a bit from overcrowding, but generally students are able to get through their lower division classes in decent time.

Cognitive science is a new major, and rather small so far. The advantage is that you have a good group of professors who are passionate about the subject. They also give a lot of interesting research opportunities, a recent one I spotted was a study involving World of Warcraft that would give you credit for a research seminar.

I also applied for biology at UCSC, if anyone has more input, it’d be greatly appreciated :)

I’m sort of interested in hearing replies as well, tho for a different reason. My son is a junior in Bio at University of Redlands, a private school about 60 miles east from LA. We considerd a UC for Bio as the grad schools all have great reps. I’m just curious if the undergrad program could offer many more on-campus internships (paid, summer or otherwise)? Is there a lot of competition? I ecpected more assistance at UOR with finding off-campus internships but that wasn’t the case. My son did secure one at his school (with pay), but I’m also curious what on-campus, paid summer internships opportunities UCSC (or other UC’s) offered. (tho not referencing the REU program).
Thanks.
