biology majors?

I'll be an incoming biology major, and was just wondering if any current NU students could share their current experience with it.

I’m a neuroscience major, not a bio major, but the first year there’s a lot of overlap.
You’re going to have some big lecture classes to start out with, if you don’t have AP or Ob credit for them - classes like intro bio and chem. I found the classes to be pretty decent and the professors made a point of being accessible. Still, it goes through a lot of information quite rapidly.
Labs can sometimes be a pain when they go long; 2nd semester bio, the prof insisted that a 3 hour lab should last all 3 hours every week, and cram in as much as possible. This is not typical, thankfully.
You’ll also have a number of core requirements that you will start working on first year with everyone, not just bio majors. I didn’t have to take first year writing, but from what I’ve heard, it’s not always the most exciting class, but it’s OK.
So far, I’ve had a really good experience with the bio department; the professors have been engaging and approachable and I’ve met a lot of great people in my classes.

Sounds good!
I have Detrich for my Bio 1 class, ever had him?

^^^Detrich’s the man! I had him first semester for Bio and loved him. His material is very straightforward and practically out of the book. His tests are basic multiple choice, and as long as you know the material, you’re all set. He also does a lot of research in Antartica, so except some of his lectures to cover some of that. Pretty interesting stuff. He’s easily approachable after class and during his office hours so get to know him.

As for being a Bio major in general, I had a great first year. NEU does a good job in transitioning it’s science kids into its curriculum. They make you take a bunch of non-core intro classes that lay out what’s expected of you.

Just make sure you stay on top of all your work (trust me, there’s a lot) because it only gets harder from here.

That makes me feel so much better! Thanks! :)
