Biology October 2011's answers

Hey, guys
I'm getting confused with those many posts on the Biology Thread.
Let's do a compilation of all the questions that showed up on the test. I took E not M so I'll need your help guys. :)

The diagram that showed a terminal portion of the nervous system of a segmented earthworm:
What effect would the destruction of neuron n have on the earthworm?
The muscular movements at only segment I would be stopped.
If the worm is touched at segment III, the muscles in the segment contract. Which neurons are responsible of this stimulus-response reaction?
w, u, v
If neuron y in ganglion IV were destroyed, which of the following would be the result?
Segment I would not respond to a stimulus at the skin of segment III.

If the earthworm is touched at segment III, and the muscles in two respond, which neurons are responsible?

w, t, q.

process that produces pyruvic acid: Glycolysis
process that can produce lactic acid: Fermentation

A scientist wants to check if a black guinea is heterozygous for the fur color trait?
mating the black guinea with a white recessive one and observing the offspring

the antibiotics experiment:
the best treatment to eliminate infections: penicillin
which would be a control in a petri dish: no antibiotics
penicillin had colonies in the white area: the new colonies have a penicillin resistance

the carrots experiment:
carrots in paper bags become more flexible than carrots in plastic bags

the best treatment to see the effect of light:

black plastic bag and clear plastic bag

why carrots become flexible:

water evaporates and cell membrane shrinks.

the ones that sprouted: higher metabolic rate

bacteria in roots: nitrogen cycle

the atmosphere didn't contain: Oxygen.

order of level of organization: population community ecosystem biosphere

effect of DDT: resistant.. survived.. reproduced.

larger number of people if we eat: fruits and vegetables.

the tertiary consumers: hawks

greatest amount of energy: Grasses

the cat listening to the can being opened: conditioning.

muscles need: ATP

color-blindness ratio of sons: .5

little evolutionary change: enviromental niche that remained somehow stable

exposure to heat: blood circulation on the skin surface.

rain forest are all of the following except: temperature fluctuations.

the one that had different species out of one species: adaptive radiation

the ocean is least productive in the: abyssal zone

adaptation in the abyssal zone needs: low temperature and high pressure adaptation.

the one that asked about the birch, oak and beech:

respiratory losses more than photosynthetic gains.

the one asking about three leaves will remain the same 1000 whatever..

succession: late succession species have higher rates of photosynthesis

250 joules

getting reliable data from all of the following except: unchanged temperature.

the one having flies

400 flies.

x is a better competitor.

if we started with 200 instead of 100: I can't remember the answer.. i think i said something about remaining in equilibrium (not sure though)

the one that asked about most related species: something californicus and something floridanus.

one asking about starch: starch wouldn't go anywhere.

the role of colon: absorption of water.

oxidative-reduction: electrons.

the cochlea vibrates faster with lower pitch.

the one with two circles: species - genus.

which of the following is always required in successful reproduction in multicellular organisms: haploid.

the female reproductive system: oviduct

energy is most in: lipids.

the one about new alleles: mutation.

mitochondria: eukaryotes but not prokaryotes.

can someone confirm the cytosol question plz.

Mother passing antibodies to fetus : passive immunity
the clumping of anti B antigens with type B blood : agglutination
Release of histamines : allergic reaction
Small pox virus exposure : active immunity
II and IV (Hydra, jellyfish)
Two species benefit : mutualism
Islands split, animals different: evolution differs for small populations
Bat wings, fly wings: convergent evolution
Ostrich: warm blooded animal (unlike trout, lizard, salamander, snake)
Type of organism: angiosperm
Process from Stage 1 to 2: mitotic division
Which type of human disease: cancer
Presence of auxin: enlargement and division (can anyone confirm)
Chance of having a girl: 50%
Number of generations to get AABB and aabb mix to have 9:3:3:1 phenotype ratio: 2
Number of phenotypes from Aa and aa mix: 2
Number of gametes possible from AaBb = 4
Number of chromosomes of fly cell right before mitosis (haploid number = 4): 16
urea does not provide energy

@naderMekadis i put enlargement and division also. idk if that is right though. difference sources say that it is both while others say it’s only enlargement.

the one about alleles: are you sure? the choices were like mutation, sexual reproduction, random combination(or formation) of gametes, natural selection. i thought it was the random gametes one.

with the three leaves, did you put 1000 leaf area or 3000 leaf area?
