Biology Program

How is the Biology program at UMass/Commonwealth College? Is it strong?

How does it compare to that of UNH, UMaine, and URI?

Bump – Anyone?

I am also wondering if their biology program is strong. Does anyone know if there are courses in genetics for undergraduates?

Yes, there are genetics courses.

There is a small honors Biology program at UMass called “BIOTap”. It is an invitation only program, within the Commonwealth Honors College. In addition to smaller Biology classes, and special weekly seminars, it is a Residential Academic Program. The 40 students in the program live together on the same floor of the dorm in the Orchard Hill section. It is for Freshman year only.

I am currently a honors biology student at UMass and I love it! I actually took a genetics class last semester which was amazing! The best part about te UMass bio department for undergrad students is that there are so many research opportunities and such a wide variety of classes to choose from. The school is also in the process of building a huge lab research building that will most likely just continue to distinguish the bio department as one of the best. I would definitely say UMass is better than any of the other schools you listed, especially if you are an honors student, where you are required to complete a semester of lab work to graduate.

Coastocoast1234-- UMass is part of the 5 College Consortium. Have you explored biology course options at the other colleges? Have you had students from the other colleges in any of your courses? What would be a good course in the Biology Dept at UMass for a student from one of the other schools to enroll in?

Curious. My daugher is a Smithie.
