biology vs. music

I put biology down as my major because I want to go to med school, and it would just be easier because the classes overlap. I think biology is interesting, but I also like music. I know my grades would be a lot better if I majored in music. I'm just worried that I won't get into any med schools and that all I'll have will be a BA degree in music. The last thing in the world I would want to be is a band director. Do you guys think it's worth it to risk it and major in music since I'll probably get better grades? What can you do with a music degree alone? Also, how good is the music dept. at UCLA? Am I even allowed to change my major to music education if I didn't audition? It's not like I want to do music performance.

i like music too but i think i'm just going to focus on biochem as my major so that i can have a solid foundation of sciences. i also plan on going to med school, and if i ever reconsider that option, at least i'll still have a degree in biochem.

A BA degree in music is a BA just like any other and in no way limits your opportunities. Some graduate programs might require some review or pre-requisite work, but there are many doctors, lawyers, psychologists, and successful business people out there who began their education with a BA in music.

Actually, I read somewhere that the acceptance rate for music majors to medical school is above average as compared to most other majors, though I don't remember quite where. If you searched around you could probably find it.

Also, if you're looking at music for higher grades, you may want to do something else. At most places music is actually the most time consuming major except for engineering.

I was a music major at UCLA for a while before I changed. I did get pretty good grades in music while I was there, but it's not easy! The theory classes can be v. difficult. The performance groups are good and a lot of fun. My main reason for quitting the major was that I did not particularly like the head flute coach, and as I lived in the dorms, it was difficult to find somewhere to practice.

I hear that music majors have a good chance of getting into med school, but I don't know first-hand how true that is. If you minored in bio, you could cover that base as well. Good luck.
