I am writing as a very concerned parent. My son is graduating with his BSE in Biomedical Engineering. We have spent hours online and everything we read about the job outlook is extremely discouraging. We can't even find any entry level positions he could apply for. Even if he was graduating from grad school, every opening is asking for multiple years of experience in the industry. He has not had any luck finding an internship either. He has a 3.95 gpa, excellent professor recommendations, has researched since spring of his sophomore year, and was a TA for a semester. He has applied to grad schools and getting very interested replies from professors, some in the top 20 schools, but he had planned on doing as MS instead of PhD (they want him as a PhD student). He is now really questioning his choice in undergrad and debating if he should consider doing his MS in mechanical engineering instead of biomedical. Any advice would be appreciated. It just makes me sick that he has worked so hard with an extremely challenging curriculum and can't even find an internship/entry level job. He had planned on getting an MS from the beginning, but even with that, things don't look very good.

yes getting an ms in mechanical would be a good choice, but how about med school? since he seem to be a high achieving student, med school seemed like the safest way to get good jobs.

He is a definite no for med school. That was his original intention when he picked this as an undergrad, but has since changed his mind. Would an ms in mechanical give him a better chance at employment in industry rather than an ms in biomedical? He’s afraid to commit to a 5 year PhD when he doesn’t know if that’s the type of a career he wants and it still wouldn’t provide industry exposure. Thanks
