Kent State.
My major is Biotechnology right now. I am planning to do a minor in chemistry.
I plan to get a job after graduation.
I looked up online and found out that Biochemistry major has more salary than Biotechnology major.
The course load is almost the same.
Biochemistry has physical chemistry in the course load which I hate.
Is biotechnology worth graduating with?? How are my chances of getting a job with biotechnology major compare to Biochemistry???
What is your definition of “more salary”? And are workers w graduate degrees being compared to workers w undergraduate degrees?
Biotechnology and biochemistry are two very different things. Biotech is more of a niche, in which you develop technology intended to exploit biological processes (such as GMOs, Monsanto is a huge biotechnology company). It is loosely affiliated with bioengineering.
Biochemistry is much broader. Many people who go into biochem end up not only as scientists, but also use biochem as an undergrad pre-med track. If you’re only going to major in biochem for the money, and it has stuff you hate to learn, I wouldn’t recommend doing it. Evaluate what kind of career what you want and which major would be best fit for it.
Do the asserted salaries refer to persons who ONLY have bachelor’s degrees? Obviously the figures can only be compared if persons with further degrees are not included in the averages. Probably people with biochemistry bachelor’s degrees much more often acquire graduate degrees than people with biotechnology bachelor’s degrees.
I personally do not recommend any of the chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology majors if your intention is to go straight from undergrad to the job market. In terms of marketablility they are about on par with the esoteric Liberal Arts. There are a lot of very crappy lab jobs that pay garbage man salaries. The best options with science degrees are to teach high school or go to a healthcare professional school. Most of the people I know who try the job market after graduating end up either underemployed or working crappy dead-end lab jobs for ~$15 hour. It simply isn’t worth the effort for an inteligent student.
