Hello all. I saw on the USC Housing website that Birnkrant students will be able to move in earlier than other students to participate in a special retreat. USC Housing told me the early move-in date would be August 15th, but said they would not accept early arrival requests until August. That seems a little too late, as we have to book hotels and flights now for good rates. Does anybody else know about this special interest community retreat at Birnkrant and how we would request early arrival from now? Thanks.

The actual MI date for Birnkrant is 8/15. You will be guaranteed to MI that day.

Is there any information about the retreat? I was assigned to Birnkrant but received no information about it. Thanks!

We haven’t received any information either. I just emailed housing to ask about the early move in because I wanted to buy our plane tickets. All they said was that MI for Birnkrant would be 8:30am on Monday, August 15th. I assume more information will come later. My son is in a triple on 4th floor. How about you?

Hi NCMom. I’m not sure what floor I’m on but I know I have a double. We have to buy plane tickets too and my mom wanted to know if they should plan on staying overnight or if we would be doing the retreat that day. I hope they send out some info soon!

I am just guessing but I would think that by 2pm or so the retreat will start and parents will say goodbye. I am staying until Wednesday though because my sister and I are going to do some site seeing on Tuesday. Where are you from?

Has anyone received any more info on the retreat yet? My D and I have booked travel to arrive in LA on Sunday, August 14, expecting to move into Birnkrant Monday Aug. 15. I hope this is still the case!!!
I am wondering when to book my flight home and would love to get some guidance on when this retreat begins and what it entails. Thanks!

I received confirmation from an admissions officer that it is happening. However, like you, I have not received any details in any form. We should get on this…

I guess I will have to call them because I really need to firm up my travel plans. If I find out anything definitive, I will post it.

Troika mom, we are arriving on Sunday too! But if you find out anything about the retreat, please let us know.

Just talked to USC office. Early move in for Birnkrant is Monday Aug. 15. There will be a meeting for parents on Monday around 4 pm. The rest of the retreat schedule is still being finalized, but Tuesday is looking like a fairly busy day for the students. So parents can definitely feel okay about leaving Tuesday.
An email will be sent to Birnkrant residents soon with some initial, preliminary information. A finalized schedule will be sent out mid-July.

Thanks for getting the information for us!

Good to hear that news. I read on USC housing that there is a $75 charge for early move-in/arrival each day. I would hope this fee is waived for Birnkrant residents. Does anybody know about this? Thanks.

I wanted to order linens through the University Linen Program. It says on the order forms that linens can be picked up on August 17, but would have to be shipped to your home address if you’d like it sooner. We are flying in from out of state so I don’t want to do that. Is anyone else ordering linens early through this program? Are you able to have it shipped directly to USC? I called but no one seemed to know.

I didn’t call, but assumed we couldn’t get them early at school so I ordered through an online store myself. I know several companies allow you to order on line and pick up at their local store.

This may not apply to USC, but , four years ago for my D at another school, I ordered linens on-line that looked a lot like the ones offered now to USC students. The sheets and comforter were okay, but I was very very disappointed with the quality of the towels. Very, very thin. And we had ordered a terry-cloth robe that was absolutely crummy. I will never order dorm linens on-line again.

Thanks NCMOM and troikamom! I think I will go ahead and order them online.

I saw this post in the “East Coast” thread. Lencias posted this

I’m pretty sure they don’t just let anyone move in early. Check with Housing on that… if you have half decent timing on movein day, it won’t be too busy. Just make sure he picks up his linens before distribution ends for the day, otherwise he’ll be sleeping on a bare bed the first night and possibly need to make a crosscampus trek on foot the second day carrying a huge box of linens.

I also remember this topic being discussed at orientation and there is supposed to be a location you would go to to pick up your order.
