Depending on the school, the RA may already know when students have birthdays. DD is a “Birthday Fairy,” an elected position(!) for her 75 member dorm. She and another “fairy” make a little sign for every birthday and put a few decorations on doors. For kids who have summer birthdays, they get a half birthday sign. It’s also a school tradition to toss the birthday celebrator in the shower at midnight on the big day. Everybody gets a bit of attention on their birthday!
My D turned 18 on her first day of freshman orientation so I can relate! We gave her a special gift and note the night before and told her to open it when she had a minute. We saw her only for a short time on her birthday, during the “kiss and bye” ceremony that morning. It was such a bittersweet moment saying goodbye to our
D on her birthday, on her first day off college, but she was beaming with excitement and looked so happy. I don’t think she could’ve asked for a better way to celebrate her entry into adulthood! Good Luck to you and your D!
intparent, does your D like the place near campus where they flash freeze the ice cream after you order it, using liquid nitrogen? That one made me roll my eyes and say ‘only in California!’
I’m currently trying to figure out what to send my DD for her bday this spring, cupcakes would be nice if I can coordinate them to arrive at her team practice to share.
This year for my D’s birthday I sent a large basket of Cheryl’s cookies and brownies to her sorority house. What’s nice about them is they are individually wrapped so they keep well and are easy to share. You can order them online (I won’t include web address but easy to google).
@mamabear1234 - LOL re: liquid nitrogen icecream. My D worked at a new “artisan creamery” that did that in Cleveland last summer - so not only in California!
My S had his birthday during freshman orientation. We had celebrated before he left home and I think he went out for pizza with some of his new friends. Neither of my kids have been home for their birthdays since they left for college. We usually put a little extra cash into their bank accounts for them to go out to dinner or a concert or whatever. Luckily, they both have good friends who usually do something festive.
Hmm, I don’t think I gave her a gift certificate to that one! Do you know what it is called? She hasn’t mentioned it. I hear a lot about “I Like Pie” (which I tried when I was out there in November, and I like it, too!) and Eureka!
Back in the day … when I turned 18 in early October of freshman year … I was then old enough to drink! I seem to remember going out for pizza and egads beer!
It’s new, I think, called a la minute. We had to take her there in Feb when we visited. We also had lunch at Eureka (they have good veggie burgers). It’s in the same complex as Eureka.
