the title is self explanatory, should i black out the SSN the bank account # or any other sensitive stuff, since i'm mailing via regular mail, i figured it might be wise. I don't know if the colleges will be offended...or is this a common practice.

PS....i'm talking about the tax forms and parents paychecks....not Fafsa or anything

Hey hz:

I'd like to know too. My mom already feels funny about having to disclose her ss# on the fafsa but had no choice and did it. But she wants to white-it-out on the copy of her tax return that goes to the college. She says she's uncomfortable as to what kind of security the college will give this information. Its not like she's paranoid, but she had a problem with identity theft a while back, and it was traced back to the personnel office at her job. So I guess she's got a good reason to be hesitant.

I hope somebody will be able to tell us if its ok to do this.

bump.... anybody know?

Why don't you call the financial aid office directly and ask? Different offices have different policies on these things, I know. For instance Johns Hopkins used to actually order up the 1040 for the year and check on the figures, so they would need the ssns and permission to do so. I don't know if other schools go through such a scrutiny. So you can see why it would really depend on the school.

Jaimom:

I think I kind of understand. Would this be related to the IDOC procedure? I'm doing all the forms on my own, if its not a problem, can you tell me how I can best explain this to my mom?
