If a scholarship application wants 1040s, is it acceptable to black out Social Security Numbers? Do they scholarship organizations need these for any verification???

My parents are just a little nervous about sending out SSN to too many places. Thanks a lot! :)

I would not send soc security numbers (even yours) to any organization for a scholarship. There are too many scams out there and you never know who is legit and who isn’t. I have never known a scholarship to actually ASK for a tax form, so yes, def black out the numbers.

Okay cool, thank you very much. I’m pretty sure the scholarship is legit (Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarship), but I will definitely black out the numbers. Thank you!

When my son was applying several scholarships asked for 1040’s so I don’t think its that unusual. Places like Kiwanas, Junior Auxillary, Rotary etc. Although he did’nt win any of them we know they were legit because he had friends who did win them. I not only blacked out our ss #'s but also my checking account #'s.

Even when I was corresponding with some of the schools my kids applied to/were waitlisted at/were accepted to, I only gave the last 4 numbers of their SSNs. That is usually sufficient (except for the original FAFSA/Profile applications). I did NOT give their SSNs to the ACT or SAT folks.
