Black Panthers

Ugh why do the crazies (Fred Phelps, KKK, NBPP) always come to our campus

Because they get confused when we proudly identify ourselves that way?

....as Crazies, I mean.
Ha. Cameron. OK then.

haha good one. :P

No seriously though, they are having NCCU students speak, maybe even a duke student, and every national media outlet will be there watching them carefully. This is more national media attention than this crazy group has ever gotten probably. What faster way to discredit themselves than to actually follow through with these rumors? I am still staying inside as a safety precaution but I really believe the thing will blow over and that by this time tomorrow night the NBPP will be on TV saying "we were peaceful and how come everyone painted us as violent? they are just racist" etc etc.

Hmm. I do see your point. I guess we'll just have to see what tomorrow (or...err...a few hours) brings. I really am hoping that I can just stress out and take my finals in peace. I'm just cursing the fact that they HAD to come on the day that I have 2 finals and a paper. First of all, because I am a bit scared. Second of all, I don't want there to be a ton of noise outside while I'm taking a final in SocSci. And third...if they do come on campus and they're NOT carrying guns, I want to be there with my freaking camera! I finally have access to a darkroom this summer, and some shots of that protest would probably be AWESOME. (Sorry, it's the documentary photographer in me...sort of instinctual).

By way of an update; they held the rally at the entrance to Duke on Chapel Drive and afterwards did plan , in the words of Malik Zulu Shabazz, to "...humbly, silently walk through this campus." Police Chief Bob Dean told them that would not be possible, and that President Brodhead had said no disruption of exams would be allowed. After some exchange of words, the group went to 610 Buchanan and I haven't seen a report from there.

I just drove along main street home from lunch, when I passed buchanan it was closed off by police and there were tons of police guarding the whole thing.

Just so all of you know--this rally may be getting a lot of coverage on the local tv stations in and around Durham, but very little on the national network channels. They are giving heavy coverage to the Immigrant Protests that are occurring nationwide today. Only Fox is giving much coverage to the rally outside the Duke campus, and even then it's been just a few minutes each hour. So the NBPs aren't getting their wish of having national attention--and it does appear that it was a rather small crowd compared to what I had expected. Thank goodness all of you are safe, and that they did not come onto the campus!!

Good luck on your exams--all of us are pulling for you, and keeping you in our prayers!!!! :) :)

Maybe my friends and I are in the minority, but I haven't worried one bit about today...and i was just riding the C-2 and saw a group walking up Anderson past the Nasher - not a lot of people, and mainly media scurrying along with them. The NBP may be crazy, but they aren't stupid. If there was a choice of making a point or bringing weapons, chances were they would pass on the weapons so they could be allowed on campus. As long as they don't disturb me or others, I don't care if people hear their message. They're a radical fringe group whose message will only turn people against them...so they can go right ahead. Plus, Duke/Durham Police are everywhere and won't let anything get out of hand.

I also heard they were going to march from the LAX fields to the house on Buchanan, so chances are they just modified their route a bit to start on city property (at Chapel and Duke University Rd).

I'm soooo glad the national media is basically ignoring this protest. The worst thing that can happen, it seems to me, is for these nutty groups to get a ton of attention and coverage in the press. This is the first time in recent history that I've actually been proud of our news media! :)

Accionara, you sound like you will benefit from a Duke education because it's apparent that it will be broader than the one you've received thus far in prep school. Hopefully, while at Duke you will visit the John Hope Franklin center, take one of his classes (if he hasn't retired), and make the acquaintance of thinking students like DukeEgr.

dukeEgr is not a student, he's a (very good) engineering prof.

Haha, I was just browsing through and the Duke board gets my pick for one of the coolest threads since a Prof is on here.
Haha, Sweet!

Personal favorite quote from coverage so far: "Then, outnumbered by the reporters covering them, they set off on a march toward 610 N. Buchanan Blvd." -N&O

hahaha
