Blair School of Music Regular Descision

Hi, I’m applying at the Blair School of music this year for voice and I managed to get a callback. Are there any detailed statistics on the percentage of students who get callbacks and get in, or the number of voice students that Blair accepts? Also, us there a big difference in admission applying ED versus RD at Blair? Thank you so much for your time.

I don’t think you are going to get stats on how many callbacks are admitted. But perhaps I will stand corrected. My impression is that admission to Blair is markedly wholistic, and perhaps not as stats driven as the other schools although academic talent is required. I congratulate you on your call back and send you all the good wishes in the world as you audition for conservatories.

I asked my daughter (a Blair student, not voice) and I’ll post any info she provides. The sense I got was that admission to Blair rides to a large extent on the audition. Once Blair makes its list of students it would like to accept, an academic review occurs, at which point some students are eliminated and some are offered acceptances (for my daughter’s instrument I was told somewhere around a third of those who made the Blair cut were eliminated in that year…which may or may not be typical for other years or other instruments, including voice). So it is a holistic process, but the components are sequential. Good grades won’t make up for a bad audition but bad grades could keep you out. If someone who makes the Blair cut but doesn’t make the academic cut is eliminated, does that mean that someone not originally on the Blair list is pulled up onto the list? Not necessarily. But that’s just my sense of things, and I’m just a parent, so some grains of salt should be taken. Best of luck to you! My daughter loves Blair, btw.

My son got his Regular Decision acceptance e-mail on Friday, 2-13-15. That was earlier than we expected (if at all). There was no mention of scholarships or any financial information… Do we need to assume he got no merit aid, or is that to be determined later?

The Cornelius Vanderbilt Merit scholars are distributed among Vandy undergrads sub-schools and Blair has its allocation to award. I believe that all of those decisions will be released at one time in early March. Ditto the Chancellor’s Scholars which can overlap with Blair of course. I would expect that there may still be a few specific scholarships in the performance arts however many of those old timey smaller specific named scholarships were submerged into the overall CV pool a few years ago. There is a phenom in college admissions called “Early Write.” you can google that phrase. Our two sons got a few Early Write admissions. I figure a conservatory of music is a much more nuanced and individualized admissions process and that Blair is not as predictable on time tables as the College of Arts and Sciences.

Hi I am currently looking to transfer to Vanderbilt’s Blair school of music. Financial aid is a huge factor for me. On the website it says transfer students are not eligible for merit aid - does this include the school of music? Or would I be eligible for merit aid based on my audition? (I had my audition in the last couple of weeks)

BelCantoTurtle (like the name). Although you would not be eligible for one of the merit scholarships offerred by Vandy, you would still be eligible for need based financial aid. So theoretically your financial need would be met.

Does anyone know if Blair offers any talent/merit awards on it’s own (other than the CV scholarship)? I can’t find much online.
