Blatantly Lying on an Application?

No, not lying like "I have a 4.0 GPA" when you actually have a 2.5, but lying like telling two or three schools that they're your top choice. One of my friends is just re-using one of his essay for all the suppliments that ask "Why ____" and just changing the name and pertinent info. In this essay it pretty much says "This school is my top choice and if admitted I will absolutely come here."

I have some ethical issues with that because it's a straight up lie. Not even like saying "this school is one of my top choice" but it's saying "this school IS my top choice."

Thoughts?

It’s unethical and ******y, but not technically against any rules.

It’s just as unethical as how the universities encourage students to apply to them (i.e. “we want you at xU!”), just so the schools can reject the students to bolster the school’s low admission rate.

Is something a lie if nobody believes it?

Still, it’s wrong to tell multiple colleges that they are your top choice.

If a school has ED, and you’ve applied RD, the statement “I would definitely come here if admitted” seem a bit strange, doesn’t it.

This is one of the problems with lying – you get caught.

Here’s the second problem – taking the essay, and just changing the name of the school is lazy. Do you think that the admissions officer can’t tell that you’ve taken a canned essay and changed the name of the school?

The better way to handle this is to find two or three things about the school that are unique to the school. It isn’t hard – It can be simple things “I was very excited after my tour with John Smith”. The “Gothic Architecture of Jones Hall reminded me of Hogwarts” Anything really that shows that you’ve really looked into the school and actually taken the time to tailor your essay to them.
