I'm a sophomore in High School so I've been thinking about college, obviously. I know that on the applications you list your ec's and your volunteering time and all that. I've been wondering how your guidance counselor confirms the validity of what you put down, especially when it comes to volunteering? He/she doesn't know exactly how much you volunteered so do you need some sort of signature from where you volunteered? Even then, you could fake it.

How would you feel if a college lied about sending you an offer of admission?

How would you feel if the college found out…

Please don’t lie about your ECs, although they probably won’t find out. (But don’t you feel bad if you lie?)

lying is bad, always. didn’t your mother teach you that?

There’s nothing wrong with lying unless you get caught… so a little exaggerating shouldn’t hurt. I can see from your post that you don’t have the moral considerations the other posters think you should have. :P

Lying about extracurriculars is not worth the risk to your college applications (rejection? rescinded acceptance?), your college standing (expulsion?), your reputation, etc. Don’t even think about it. Just do the volunteer work.

I never said I would actually lie. I was just wondering what kind of restrictions there are on these kinds of things. Someone could just say they volunteered everyday for 5 years without any kind of proof. Someone obviously couldn’t lie about being on a sports team or something, couldn’t they?

Actually, the University of California admissions committee has a small “audit” team that randomly selects applications to verify awards, ECs, etc.

^yeah, i heard they randomly pick 1%of their applicants to check the validity

don’t lie, i doubt you would get caught, but it is still a risk and well, lying is wrong.

BUT these are college apps we’re talking about. now is not the time to be modest! make sure you are not selling yourself short on your apps because you’re afraid you’ll be lying. sell everything you did as much as you possibly can, all of your EC’s and your volunteer work. don’t lie, but don’t be modest either.

You CAN lie about anything you want; the forms are not going to complain no matter what you put on them. And it’s honestly not guaranteed that you would get caught. But you MIGHT get caught, and if you get caught you’re probably going to have huge problems.
