“Opponents of the research institute label it anachronism; its scholars, they allege, have rivaling those of pre- Revolutionary French nobility.”

OK. Let’s take it one step at a time. “Opponents of the research institute label it ____ anachronism.” So there are people who don’t like the research institute because they believe that the research done there is outdated–that’s what an anachronism is: something that’s not in its proper place, usually referring to a long time ago. You can tell that the first blank will be an adjective, modifying anachronism.

“its scholars, they allege, have ____ rivaling those of pre-Revolutionary French nobility.” So the people who don’t like the institute because the research done there isn’t modern, are saying something about the scholars at the institute (who are doing the research). Apparently the scholars “have ___ rivaling those of pre-Revolutionary French nobility.” Well, pre-Revolutionary here basically means a long time ago, antiquated. Scholars at the institute have something that were there back before the French Revolution. So, now try answering the question.

“Despite their ________ proportions, the murals of Diego Rivera give his Mexican compatriots the sense that their history is ____ and human in scale, not remote and larger than life.”

“the murals of Diego Rivera give his Mexican compatriots the sense that their history is ____ and human in scale, not remote and larger than life.” So you can tell that this blank will mean something along the lines of “human in scale, not remote and larger than life.” A good word would be “realistic.”

“Despite their ________ proportions…” The word “despite” indicates that the blank will be close to opposite of what the rest of the sentence said. So a good word might be “unrealistic” or “giant.”

“The Supreme Court’s reversal of its previous ruling on the issue of states’ rights _its reputation for _.”

A ruling is a decision made by a court. So when it says, “The Supreme Court’s reversal of its previous ruling…” it means that the Supreme Court made a decision a while ago, but changed their mind (reversal of its previous ruling). So the Supreme Court changed their mind on some issue. What did that do to the Court’s reputation for ______? Well, it either strengthened the Court’s reputation for changing their mind, or it weakened the Court’s reputation for being very stubborn.

You’re looking for a choice that relates to the words “anachronism” (something out of place) and “nobility.” Clearly the opponents would label the institution negatively, so E is out. The French nobility would have something relating to wealth or privilege, so B and D are out. We are left with A and C. The second word in each choice basically means the same thing, so which choice has a word that would be associated with nobility? Irreproachable wouldn’t, so A is the answer.

Pg. 39 #2

The direction of the sentence reverses here, so you know the words in the answer choice will be opposites. The first word must be consistent with “remote and larger than life,” so B, D, and E are out. “Human in scale” implies that viewers can relate to the murals, so look for a word that says that the murals are open to the viewers. “Accessible” is clearly the better choice since the sentence says nothing about age (“ancient” cannot fit).

Let’s go through the choices one by one. A is out because if the Supreme Court reversed its decision, then it shows that the Supreme Court isn’t infallible. C is out because if the Court were dogged, it would not have reversed its decision. D is out because the Court is being flexible by reversing its decision, not inflexible. E is out because the Court is vacillating by reversing its decision.
