BM and BA

what's the difference between bachelor of music and bachleor of arts in music?

Assuming that a college offers both a Bachelor of Music (BM) and a Bachelor of Arts in Music (BA), it can generally be regarded that the BM is for the more seriously focused Music major. The BA is for somebody with a strong interest in Music but who also desires and places the context of this interest into a broader liberal arts program.

The BM is for somebody who probably also considered a conservatory environment but wasn't ready to make that kind of committment to a singular discipline. At the same time, either driven by passion and/or natural ability, this person wanted to put a keen focus on music, either in performance or composition. It is likely that a holder of a BM will want to advance to graduate level studies and/or to perhaps persue a performance career in music. Very often, many colleges will audition candidates for their BM program. A conservatory, such as Juilliard, offers a BM and does NOT offer a BA.

With a BA in Music, the options are quite varied. A holder of a BA in Music may have even followed a pre-med track, taken the MCATs and applied to med school. It is an emphasis within the wider breadth of a liberal arts education.
