My D is interested in MT and Music Edu but is confused about which direction to go in. My suggestion to her was to obtain BM in MT and then go on to get her MM in Music Edu. Is there a difference in the quality of MT programs when comparing the BM to other MT degreed programs?

MT degrees can be BA, BM or BFA. A BA will have more general educations courses resulting in what is considered a more well rounded education. A BM will have more music specific courses than a BFA. At the top of the thread listing you will find one called Big List of MT Colleges, it lists the type of degree each college offers. By the way, welcome to CC!

My D is getting her BM degree in vocal performance with a concentration in Musical Theatre at NYU (Steinhardt.)

She decided to go the BM route because she may want to eventually teach. I started teaching as a second career when I had children (after years in marketing communications), and she sees teaching as a possible option for herself someday.

Also, she wanted the knowledge gained by being a music major as both a performer and as someone who might want to work in the music/ entertainment industry after graduation.

She loves the program and the range of classes she is taking in theatre, dance, voice, song anlaysis, etc. The students in the program are very talented and will be well prepared to enter into all facets of musical theatre.

BTW…if you ask NYU the primary difference between their BM degree at Steinhardt and their BFA at Tisch, they will tell you that the BM degree is for singers who act and the BFA is for actors who sing.

In general I would say there is more focus on voice in a BM vocal performance/ MT major and more focus on acting and dance components in a BFA MT program. That is not to say that either program can’t provide a well balanced curriculum.

Good luck!
