BM vs BFA in MT

Looking at the FSU website and information here on CC, I do have some questions regarding the MT programs at FSU. Other than the audition differences (BM has some classical song requirements) is there any difference in either the audition or the program once accepted? (For example, does the MT BM degree have more music classes, or am I confused?) Do students audition for the same auditors? Is a strong dancer better served to audition through the School of Visual Arts, Theatre and Dance, or to highlight singing skills through a School of Music audition? Does one graduate with a BFA or BM, or is that dependent on the choice of audition/admission?

From what I have heard from friends in the program and recently accepted to the program, they are essentially the same program. The only difference being instead of, i think a directing class, the BM kids take music theory or some music class. The other thing i was told is that if you are a strong dance do BFA because audition wise, the BFA is looking for strong dancers and BM is more lenient about dance… Hope that helps a bit :)

Actually the above post is a misplaced perception. We really do look at the skill sets of the auditioners for both tracks exactly the same way. Please make a decision regarding which track to apply for based on the curricula and the classes with which you would be happier. The core performance classes are all the same. Here are some contrasts which rather illustrate the differences between the tracks:

BFAs take Theatre History; BMs take Music history - both take MT History
BFAs take Directing; BMs take Conducting
BFAs take two tech theatre classes & two semesters of Music Theory; BMs take two additional Music Theory classes.

If you have more questions, I’ll be happy to help. Please have patience with me - I don’t check CC as often as I should!

Thanks so much Michele for the clarification! Im glad to see that the programs are not looking for different things at the auditions!
