Matt's Guide to Musical Theatre Schools: FSU Edition

Florida State’s MT program is unique in that there are two degree options - a BFA in Musical Theatre, as well as a BM in musical theatre. The BFA is just like any other BFA program in terms of courseload and curriculum. However, the BM degree program is everything you get with the BFA option, but MORE. The graduates of the BM program leave with a very well-rounded knowledge of both theatre and music. This is a magnificent option for those considering working as Music Directors. The program is very selective (sometimes the BM option only accepts five students) and the school has an extremely well-connected alumni network. Performance opportunities are abundant, and due to the small size of the program, undergrads do a lot of performing. Their alumni have performed on Broadway in Beauty and the Beast, Cabaret, CATS, Chicago, 42nd Street, Fosse, The Full Monty, Grease, Kiss Me Kate, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Oklahoma, Steel Pier, Titanic, Urinetown, Victor/Victoria, and The Wild Party, as well as National tours and off-broadway. NYC showcase for seniors.

This program is exhausting and again, not for everyone. It is a very small community and there is little time to branch out socially. Your fellow MT students are your family, for better or for worse. While FSU alumni are not necessarily in the forefront of Broadway performers, they are all certainly working with great companies and getting steady work.

I need to make a correction for the sake of accuracy. The ONLY differences between the BFA and the BM as far as required classes are as follows:
BM students take one year more music theory than the BFA students and the BM students take Conducting.
The BFA students take the following courses that the BMs do not; Acting III, Directing and the technical theatre series.

Other than the above exceptions and individual choices regarding general education credits, the programs of study are the same. We accept between 10 and 12 per year and we do NOT differentiate for the purposes of admission between the two schools - it is truly a combined program.

As always, I am happy to answer questions.

Thank you for making those corrections! My friend just graduated from the program and she has nothing but wonderful things to say to about it! Keep up the amazing work down there!

Hi Michele!
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to witness "a day in the life" of an FSU MT student tomorrow. You and I have spoken at length and I am so impressed and appreciative of the attention you, and the faculty have granted my daughter. Very excited to see the campus (not just the hall outside the audition room)!

From all of our research, FSU may be the perfect place to be for her...

Thanks again,

Barry

BroadwayPirate,

Welcome to the CC MT forum. I hope you have an informative trip to FSU. If you want a parent perspective on the MT program, let me know. I would be happy to help you in any way I can.

You might see my D tomorrow. She's a brunette with very curly hair. Hopefully, she will be back in Tallahassee tomorrow. She's auditioning in NYC for summerstock this weekend. Be sure your D talks to some of the MT students during your visit. It's always good to hear how current students perceive a program.

Have a safe trip :).

Kathy

Hello Barry!
I hope your visit went well. I am SO sorry I am out of town and was unable to be there. I heard that the student who was supposed to be your guide was unable to be there - I apologize. I hope my collegues were able to take good care of you.
Please let me know if you have more questions or if I can be of service!

Take care,
Michele

Well, last night we decorated my daughter's old Volvo with garnet and gold balloons and wrote "FSU Girl" and "Future Seminole" all over it. She got a big kick out of it! Smile. It feels good to have made a choice! If there is anyone else out there that ends up at FSU we would love to hear from you!

Great for your daughter and your family. What a burden taken off of your shoulders! Cute idea too! My best wishes to your daughter! Go Seminoles!

Michele -
We had an amazing experience and Holland was so taken with the nurturing and embracing vibe which seemed to emanate from each and every faculty member, as well as student we met. I so appreciate everything you and FSU has done for Holly.
- Barry

Thank you so much! We had a wonderful time (aside from my 36 hours of allergies!!! Gosh, who knew that Tallahassee was so pollinated??) My girl seemed quite at home as each and every student was curious, engaging, and welcoming. Gayle, Kate, and Tom was all so giving of their time, as were the other faculty we spoke with. Things are definitely looking like this may happen.... we just have to wait out the rest of those darn letters to make the most educated and thorough decision.

I will be applying to the MT BFA program at Fsu this coming fall for admission to the Fall '08 semester.

Audition aside:
Could anyone give me an idea if any of these factors will tip the MT BFA admission scales in my favor?
- 12 years of dance (Tap, Jazz, Ballet)
- 10 years of piano training
- Homeschooled
- Will have fulfilled all liberal studies requirements for the BFA program before I graduate (dual-enrollment credit)
- Male
- Extensive theatre background in the Orlando area at various professional and community theatres
- Father obtained BFA in Tech Theatre at Fsu

Note: Please understand this is not for me to brag..haha..Just trying to calculate my chances of even being considered for the MT program at FSU (i understand "competitive" is an immense understatement)

Thanks!!

MTBartell,
Very honestly, what will tip the scales in your favor is a strong audition. Your training and experience can only help your audition :-)
Your resume is weighted far less than your performance during the audition. This is because different students have different opportunities prior to college and not everyone can take advantage of extensive training classes or audition frequently.
Academic acceptance happens by the Office of Admissions independepently of the artistic evaluation. Admission to the BFA program is conditional upon acceptance to the University, so candidates must be able to meet the academic criteria for FSU.
We will begin making audition appointments on October 1, 2007 and we limit the number of candidates we will see to 240, so please call early.
I would be happy to talk with you about the audition and the program. You can call me to set up an appoint to visit or talk by phone at (850) 644-5548.

Take care!
Michele
