So I really like Bryn Mawr, but I was kind of wondering what, from your perspective, defines a Bryn Mawr student as compared to a Mt Holyoke student or a Smith student, or even a Haverford student. What distinguishes you as a school? It can even be something silly, but I’m mostly looking in terms of characteristics of the students.

I can't really discuss mawrters versus Mt Holyoke or Smith students, because BMC and Vassar were the only seven sisters I really researched. I can say that BMC's location is better than Mt. Holyoke and I think the Tri-Co/Bi-Co is more easily accessed than Mt. Holyoke's consortium, and the Tri-Co was very important to me when I was applying to BMC (because it's a women's college and I still want to have male friends).

Hmm, the difference between a Haverstudent and a Mawrter... I get the impression that if there is a scale of schools, one end being quirky/intense (say Swarthmore) and the other being more party oriented and sporty (most big state schools), I'd say that Haverford is slightly closer to the party end. They're still a bunch of geeks (just like we are), but they have more sports/parties.

Thaaaanks brillar :)
That's helpful. I am surprisingly not applying to Haverford, yet I am applying to Swarthmore... don't know how that worked out exactly.

Actually, the same thing happened to me. Haverford never really attracted me, but I was obsessed with Swat for months (applied ED), and now here I am at BMC. And to be honest- I am definitely happy with my choice, even though I was rejected from Swat, I think I'm happier at BMC than I would have been at Swat. Just passing that along as some type of useful advice to keep in mind when the letters are coming in- I thought for sure I would be going to school at my second choice (or third- Vassar was my rebound after Swat), but I was wrong (it hasn't always been flowers and daisies with BMC, but I don't think I'd be happier anywhere else). So good luck with everything, feel free to ask any other questions.

I did really bad on the SAT's but my good friend got into BMC ED & after doing some research I'm thinking about applying but I don't know if my SAT score's will really really affect my chance of getting in; that happens to be my only problem! Also, I wanted to know, I am from Boston and I have never been to Pennsylvania before, is it extremely cold?
& I wish anybody else luck on applying!

Briller and Coffeeholic:
Just wondering if either of you could be more specific as to why you found Haverford less appealing to you than Swat or BMC. I know its a great school but from what I've seen, there is a greater presence of athletics/organized sports there and wanted to know if that is such a pervasive part of the atmosphere at H that a non-jock would feel marginalized at all? Any thoughts? Thanks and good luck.

superwoman, Philadelphia is a few degrees warmer than Boston year-round. We also don't get a lot of snow. I read that MA got a few inches of snow in the last few days, but we have not had any snow yet this winter.

we have alot of snow already, but that's great! I don't really like snow too much but I can't live without a snowy winter! (lol) Thanks!

FridaKahlo- No, even though there are more sports at H, it's a long way from a non-jocks feeling marginalized. I'd say that even if Hav has more of a presense of sports, the majority of people still prioritize academics as first.

I can't really make a specific list of reasons why Hav didn't appeal to me- from people I talked to, it didn't really have the 'quirkiness' of Swat that I thought I wanted in a college, and it doesn't have the traditions/closeness of BMC. And, honestly, I probably couldn't afford another reach- I was already applying to a lot of top LACs. BMC was safer and since I seemed to like it better, I didn't really try with Hav.

One of my friends applied to Hav ED last year and is now going to BMC, I could maybe give her a push to reply...

basically what brillar wrote is the same for me, I just didn't get the same feel from Haverford that I got from BMC and Swat. Swat is an eclectic kind of place with a lot of (to steal from brillar) quirky people that I felt like I might feel more comfortable with because I can be quirky too (I am pretty strange...no joke) and quirky people don't scare me, I like them more than boring normal people.
At BMC even though I visited over the summer I still felt like a real sense of community and bonding even though there was hardly anyone there! Maybe it was the traditions that they talked about on the tour, or the fact that it's a women's college - who knows? I just felt something there that I didn't at Haverford. Haverford felt a little more.... I don't know, it just didn't feel like the right place for me.
