I’m currently in high school and I was researching universities and came across several BME programs. I’ve searched around for opinions on taking BME for pre-med, but I’m getting mixed answers. Some saying that BME is a really hard major, some saying lots of BME majors get into medical school, and the most confusing thing, some people are saying it has plenty of biology courses and others are saying it barely has any. If I were to keep my GPA high enough, say a 3.7, would I be prepared for MCAT or medical school? Just to be clear, my long term goal is to become a cardiologist, but I’d like to apply engineering knowledge to my work, maybe even do research in that area.

I several friends who are BME, and let me just say - getting/keeping a 3.7 is nearly impossible in BME. However don’t let that deter you from applying BME to BU; It’s just one of the hardest, if not the hardest major at BU.

All the regular pre med courses are covered in the major, except they’re usually required at a higher level. For example, a good premed course would be Physics 105 (the elementary algebra based physics required for all pre med). However being BME you will be required to take Physics 211, the calculus based one, which also requires you to take Multivariable Calc as a corequisite.

Being in the Engineering department you will get access to good internships and research opportunities, so no worries there.

Good luck!
