BME general questions...

I am a sophomore in HS and Biomedical engineering looks interesting and promising. I'm from Minnesota and plan on staying in the Midwest area. For BME do you have to go to med school after? What are different branches/jobs that result in a BME major. Also any additional info or experience you have.

I don’t think that BME majors major in BME to go to medical school. From another angle, no you don’t have to go to medical school with a major in BME. Like I said in another thread, I don’t know much about BME, but I HAVE heard/read that a lot of people save BME for grad school and go a different route during their undergrad years.

There are some students who major in BME as a fall back if they are unable to get into med school. That being said, it is hard to get a high GPA in BME so it is not necessarily the best path if you really plan to go on to be a doctor.

Some people do their undergrad engineering in a different field of engineering eg chemical, mech or electrical and get their Masters in BME. Reason being, those other areas of engineering are broader and can be a base for the area of BME you are interested in and you can become employed without going on for a Masters.

Students who do undergrad in BME should plan on going on to grad school in BME because BME students with a BS are in competition with those with advanced degrees. I don’t know if you can get your masters in another area of engineering with an undergrad BME, that would be something to explore.
