I'm curious how many BMEs are either doing or have done a study abroad program. Obviously there's practically no chance for during a semester, but has anyone done a summer program?

Don’t know anyone specifically, as I just finished freshman year and am not in engineering, but these links should help

Summer is probably very doable.

You could easily go when art students do - sophomore year spring.

The only class you’d miss that would technically be an issue is bio 3058, and I’m sure they’d still let you take qp even with missing that.

Following the ‘typical’ schedule, EnMath could probably be taken while abroad; same with circuits (I know someone who took circuits in Scotland) and biomech. Or you could shift those to the fall of your senior year.

Or you could even go one semester your junior year - all it means is that you’d take one of the QP semesters as a senior.

I don’t get why I thought I couldn’t study abroad when I was a BME. It’s a shame I didn’t realize this… a bit too late now though.

Yeah, I wish I had looked into this sooner. Its a May 1st deadline which rules out next year spring. Too bad, I could have skipped xiao for Biomechanics…Not sure about taking QP as a senior, it seems like something I want to be done with. Looking at the website, I really wish they had more engineering programs, especially in London or Ireland. Ireland is during the academic year only, and London is just King’s College over the summer, which only has comp sci for engineering, apparently.

As a reality check, practically no BME students study abroad for a full semester (though many will do a study abroad experience during a summer). The truth is that, even if WashU accepts transfer credit for the classes mentioned Biomechanics, Engineering Math, etc) the quality of the those classes won’t really hold a candle to what you’d experience at WashU.

If it’s something your really passionate about, follow Johnson 181’s advice and plan on going spring of sophomore year; rearrange your schedule so you don’t have to take any engineering credits that semester.

The main issue is that the deadline has already passed for spring semester, otherwise I definitely would.

Email Melanie Osbourn ASAP. I don’t know if exceptions can be made, but if they can, she’s the one to do it.

WashU doesn’t have a wide selection of engineering study abroad programs. If you don’t like any programs that are offered, you should look for engineering study abroad programs at other universities. You can petition to go on an alternate (non-WashU) study abroad program, and it’s easy to get approved if you’re an engineer. Talk to Melanie Osborn!

If you are a bme and you want to study abroad I strongly suggest you drop bme… Unless you want to go to africa and try to explain excitable ion channels to starving kids.
