Bme

So, I am sure this has been asked many times, but I couldn't find it anywhere..

If you select BME as your first choise major but are not accepted into BME, are you automatically considered for another major? Does BME rejection affect admission into another major at JHU?

"Students who select the Biomedical Engineering major must be accepted into the program at the time of application for admission. The student’s offer of admission to the university will indicate either:

* acceptance into the BME program
* acceptance into any Engineering or Arts & Sciences major except BME"

Majors and Minors

OR

"Please note this important policy: Students wishing to enroll in the biomedical engineering (BME) major must indicate BME as their first-choice major on their application. Students are admitted specifically into the BME major, based on evaluation of credentials and space available.

Students can be admitted to the university without acceptance to the BME major. No separate application is required. Notification of acceptance into the BME major is given at the time of decision notification. A limited number of transfer majors for matriculated students may be available through the Biomedical Engineering Department at the close of each academic year."

Plus, it's been discussed on the boards numerous times.

Google is your friend.

BME is the only major you are admitted into.

However, I am curious about "Does BME rejection affect admission into another major at JHU?"

AdmissionsDaniel, is the admissions process blind of the BME decision?

The information and links Adam provided should help answer your questions. I know I posted this answer before, but I can't find it ... so here goes.

When you apply to BME at Hopkins (select it as your first choice major) here is how the process works:

(1) Your application is reviewed for admissions to the University in general, just like all other applications. We do not admit students to majors but to the University.

(2) If your application is slated to be admitted and you have select BME as your fiirst choice major, then your application is re-reviewed for admission to the BME program.

(3) The decisions that can come out of the BME review are either (A) Admit to the University & admit to the BME program; OR (B) Admit to the University but not an admit to the BME program. During the BME review all applications reviewed are admits and that decision will not be changed by the BME review.

(4) For those admitted to the University but not the BME program ... those students can choose to enroll in any major offered by the School of Engineering or the School of Arts and Sciences.

(Note) The "second major" you list on your application is just a reference for the Admissions Office about your second interested major. You are not admitted into that major if you are not selected into BME.

Hope that helps.

More information can be found here:
Hopkins Forums -> Questions Re: Biomedical Engineering (BME)

Yep, that helps very much. Thank you..
But what did you mean by the last part? "You are not admitted into that major if you are not selected into BME."

So, if you are admitted to JHU, but not BME..then what major are you admitted as ?

Everyone is admitted to Hopkins as undecided; no major.

BME is the exception. So if you're not admitted to BME, you're admitted Undecided, like everyone else.

Hopkins does not admit students to specific majors, with the sole exception of BME. When any applicant applies they list one or two majors that they are most interested in studying. Applicants are not applying to these majors, since when you choose to enroll you can enroll in any major of your choice and you can change your mind about majors at any time without restriction.

The exception is BME. Anyone who wants to enroll in BME must list it as their first choice major. As I explained previously students are first reviewed for admission to the University with no concern about major. If slated to be admitted then students are re-reviewed for admission to BME. A student admitted to BME is eligible to enroll in BME or change their mind and enroll in any other major. A student admitted but not to BME, CAN ENROLL IN ANY MAJOR THEY WANT (except for BME). They are not limited to the major they selected as they second interested major.

I am not sure I can explain it any more clearer.

I think the concept of being admitted to a university with out a specific major is somewhat confusing especially to people whose families originate outside the US .

Yeah, scorp, thats what had me confused.
Thanks for the clarification.

I definitely agree. I try to explain to my mom a thousand times and she still wants me to put down EE for my intended major.

Just another question. I understand that students are not admitted to any major except for BME, but what about schools? Do we choose what school we're going when we declare a major?

The Whiting and Krieger Schools are separate, but there are no restrictions between switching majors between the school (with the exception of BME). Therefore when admitted you are actually being admitted to the full University and not a specific school.

However, your acceptance letter will read admitted to the Whiting or Krieger School based on your selection of a first intended major. You can change this at any time, including when sending back your enrollment agreement.

When you officially declare a major you do become officially connected to one of the schools. You can still switch ... it is one of the nice parts of Hopkins - the freedom to switch between schools and programs. Engineerings declare their major by the end of the first year; Arts and Sciences by the end of sophomore year.
