Hi all!! I’m new here so Forgive me if I’m posting this in the wrong place
Oh no, my whole post is missing
I have a middle schooler who is looking to apply to independent or boarding schools in New England. Coming from private elementary and independent middle. We went to The Gunnery and fell in love!! We’re applying to similar schools as well. My question is, is there FA we can apply for (other than what the schools offer)? We need major help!! How much help do these schools offer?
Hi. Welcome aboard.
Here’s an estimator from choates website.

Hope that helps. Use the search function and read as much as you can here. Good luck.
Oh God! Yes next fall is the plan! I’ve been doing quite a bit of research, which led me here. We have a bunch of open houses and interviews coming soon! The Gunnery, Taft, Westover, & a few others. I’m almost willing to beg! Lol…thanks for the info…
Those are all great schools! Good luck!
Some schools like Suffield Academy will offer merit aid to high achieving applicants and offers sports scholarships. We looked all over New England. Suffield was recommended to us by an an acquaintance and my daughter fell in love with it. Strong academics and athletics…but most importantly a really NICE student body and faculty. After having been in a socially cut throat, while academically rigorous, private school for 11 years, Suffield is a breath of fresh air. A place where kids will be pushed academically as much as they want and is appropriate for them, but will also feel welcomed and supported. I think it is a hidden gem in the boarding school world and is often overlooked. Charlie Cahn is an amazing headmaster and has done incredible things with the program and physical campus.
To answer what I think was your original question, there is pretty much no aid you can apply for beyond what the schools themselves offer. There’s a merit-based scholarship program called the Caroline Bradley Scholarship that 7th graders can apply for, but it’s extremely competitive. I’m not sure that there any other merit-based scholarships available for boarding schools, other than through the schools themselves. The good news, though, is that many of these schools have very sizeable endowments. All the schools you named have students who get a significant amount of financial aid, including students who have full financial aid (which also includes books and the like). The key is to conduct an expansive search for schools that may be a good fit, and be sure to include an ample number of schools that are not a “reach” for your child academically (i.e., schools at which he or she would be on the higher end of the applicant pool).
One other (for 7th graders with income limits) is the Jack Kent Cooke scholarship. Both the Cooke and Bradley are for talented academic kids. Bradley requires SAT. It is good practice for HS apps.
Thanks for your response! We went to Taft’s open house yesterday and she like there as well. I’m doing as much research as I can, hopefully we can make something happen. I’m crossing my fingers, praying for a miracle & all that good stuff! Lol…glad I found this forum…
@mommyandme I want to be sure you have seen the web site called boardingschoolreview.com? There is a lot of good and useful information in there (including an advanced search function) and you may find a few more schools that might suit you. Good luck!
