I’m applying to:
Hotchkiss
Exeter
Milton
Groton

Milton, Taft, St. Pauls, Choate, NMH, Kent, Deerfield, Loomis, and Andover

Belmont Hill
St. Marks
Brooks
Governor’s

A healthy dose of reality, semi-randomly pulled from last year’s “Admission Decisions” thread:

Accepted: The Hill School
Waitlisted:Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Exeter, Middlesex, Concord
Rejected: Taft, Peddie, Lawrenceville, Choate, Loomis

Just one student’s experience…even with a fairly wide range of schools, plenty of wait lists and rejections. If you are set on going to BS, make sure you are applying to a good range, not just the most selective ones.

7dad is spot-on. If you do not have local options as back ups that you would be happy attending, then please widen your net. It is such a shame to see great kids so unhappy on March 10 because they only applied to a few select schools. Only include schools that you would want to attend, of course.

another comment about SevenDad’s post #24:

At the most selective schools, a Wait List result is pretty much a soft rejection.

The WL pools are ginormous. If the school does draw from its WL, then it is very, very targeted (e.g., they might seek a replacement Sophomore boy hockey player, to fill in for a Sophomore boy hockey player who turned down their offer of admissions).

I got into all 4 I applied to! I’ll be attending Westminster School next year, so excited! :)

Oh, that is just fantastic, UKgirl! Congratulations!!!

Thank you so much!

I realise my post doesn’t really back up SevenDad and GMT, but it’s about having realistic expectations, and a good back up. My current school would be good enough if necessary. I always new I was a very strong candidate from my predicted grades and all the exams going well, so I didn’t need to apply for more.

I am confused. You have already been accepted to boarding school? Is that school on rolling admissions or something? I was under the impression that most schools do not notify you until 10 March… maybe I missed something! But congrats!

UKgirl 23 is referring Westminster school in the UK, not the one in Connecticut.

The entry criteria at the UK Westminster is different than that for the selective BS in the U.S. For the UK Westminster, admissions is based primarily on entry test scores, although other factors are assessed too.

In the U.S., plenty of kids with 99% SSAT get rejected/WL by the top U.S. BS’s, so it is difficult to use SSAT scores as a single yardstick for gauging one’s chance for admissions.

Ah. I get it now! Thanks.

The entry criteria is definitely more exam and academics based, because that’s the majority of what they want from a pupil. It’s done from a personal statement about yourself, exams in all the subjects you will study there. If you get through these (not many do) you’ll have a general interview about future plans, ECs etc then academic interviews for each subject where they will actually ask to solve problems in front of them, so are a sort of extension on the exams.

I sort of wish the entry process was done a bit later, now I have to wait so long before I actually get to go to the school!

Andover
Choate
Hotchkiss
Loomis Chaffee
TAFT
NMH

Good luck guys!
Don’t solely work on essays/SSATs, start thinking about interview!
If you’re applying to many schools, try to pinpoint the specialities of each school.
Even though every single school you apply to may not be your first choice, you almost have to make it seem that way for the interviewer (don’t blatantly lie though! ). What is that school’s speciality? Does it offer a unique program or club? Is it because of the campus? Maybe the financial aid?
Just some food for thought as the interviewing process can start as early as December for some schools.

Again, good luck!

To build on PieLover’s advice…try to know/be interested in something about the school that’s not on the home page. To show that you have done your homework.

I’m applying to St. Paul’s, Hotchkiss, and St. George’s.

^^^You have a strange CC name if that is your complete list. ;)

“Hotchkiss” must be an alternative spelling for “Choate”…

applying to Exeter, St. Paul’s, and Episcopal
