Boarding School Applications - Writing Sample

Re: the writing sample portion of application. Our child’s teacher provided some very nice comments on back of his paper and a grade but not markings on the paper and no rubric. Do we have to ask for rubric or would that suffice ? Also, how long are these papers generally?

That sounds adequate.

I think they are just trying to get a sense of how a kid writes and the expectations of their teacher – both valuable in determining what kind of transition they might have into a given BS.

Why not email or call the AOs of the schools you’re applying to and ask? IMO any chance for legitimate interest/question is good because it reminds them who you are.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I never saw any of my kids’ writing samples—they were submitted directly by the teachers. I honestly think it’s just a way for them to have a baseline to compare the application’s essays to if there is a question as to whether the applicant actually wrote them.

If you are really having trouble meeting the requirements and are proposing what you see as a good alternative, reach out to the AO.

But if the instructions are clear and give you the option of picking any good paper, I don’t think this is how you want to start to embed yourself in the mind of the AO. Just my opinion.

Question: does the topic of the paper really matter? Mine is a Romeo & Juliet analysis, but it is one of the best papers I’ve written this year.

Unless the instructions ask for something specific and this is not what was asked for, it is fine. Or put differently, why do you think you should not submit this paper?
