boarding school as incoming junior?

Junior/11th grader. I was wondering how well (or poorly) the transition goes.

I'm considering applying to boarding school next year for 2013-14, but by then I'll be a sophomore applying for eleventh grade. Is that even an option at all? And if it is, how's the experience? I'm sort of scared that if I go (granted any of them accept me l0l) I'll have that "pretty late in the game" feeling. And abandoning my current responsibilities at my school right now...

I'm at a loss.
I'd appreciate any feedback [: thanks!

I’m probably going to boarding school as a repeat junior, so you will be fine…Also, I wouldnt know personally how the transition goes but from what I’ve heard everyone is nice and welcoming, also there are a lot of people who transition…By the end of your high school experience, only half the class would have gone all four years at boarding school. Also, what schools are you thinking of applying to?

Thank you so much, Kelsey!! Good luck!
I haven’t really looked into many yet, but I have my eye on Millbrook or Thacher. I’m looking more for west coast prep schools, somewhere in norcal, hopefully.

and you?

oh, yeah i live in CA so im looking on east coast, williston northhampton, nmh, and a few others…

Hi there,.Put your mind at ease, my DS13 transferred from a public school to Blair Academy, as a Junior. Best decision for him. We are now looking for colleges that offer a wonderful fit!

Is admission difficult as a junior?

no sundlun, admission is not very difficult as a junior if there are open spots…applying as a freshman is wayyy harder…they really just want to know the type of person you are and if you are willing to try harder to get your grades up/work towards your goal in life…I mean if you have D’s and C’s and your trying to get into Exeter then i would say it will be very difficult, so try to apply to boarding schools which are in your grade range

Hi there.

We’re like the same, and I would love to be in touch with you during the process. It’s always reassuring having a kindred soul throughout the ride. ;)

where r u thinking of applying radness?

It is important not to underestimate the challenges associated with beginning prep school as an eleventh grader. Here’s some reasons why:

Eleventh grade admission is quite difficult. For example, the admit rate for new eleventh graders at Andover is about 8 percent, while Andover’s overall admit rate is 14 percent.

New eleventh graders have a slim margin of academic error because their junior year grades are of paramount importance to colleges. Where a ninth or even a tenth grader has the time to recover from a bad term, a new eleventh grader lacks that luxury.

Unlike new ninth graders who are eased into prep school life, new eleventh graders are expected to hit the ground running. They take advanced classes. They face the pressure of preparing for and taking the SATs. And they experience the angst of beginning the college selection process.

The good news is that the benefits of attending prep school as a new eleventh grader often far outweigh these challenges. As this, however, is not true for everyone, it is important to evaluate the negatives as well as the positives of beginning prep school in eleventh grade.

hey radness, I sent a message your way! ^^
Thanks to all of you for the input, I appreciate it a lot. & Momma4 I’m glad your son found the perfect fit junior year. Best of luck in the college hunt!

Hi there, I’ll be a new 11th grader at NMH in September! I can help you with anything you need, just PM me. I’m also an international student who got accepted during rolling admissions, I’ve never even been to campus! I applied to a few hidden gems and the very selective ones, but I was rejected from half of them. I’ll post about my transition once I get there, so I hope that helps!

@Sergeant Friday: Can you make a rough estimate of just how many students are applying for the junior spots at a HADES school? XD

How do colleges look at students who repeat sophomore year when going to prep school?

They like it, in fact, the boarding school will usually make you repeat the year you just took. Colleges will know that you are much more prepared with an extra year under your belt and with more classes that you took.

FYI, a discussion on “repeating”:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-parents/1231415-repeat-students-academic-red-shirting.html

Colleges are familiar w kids repeating at BS; they do not view it negatively.

I just found out Mark Zuckerberg was actually in the same boat as us. He went to boarding school his junior year.

oh my gosh! yes! that means were going to be super rich genius’s!

I entered Exeter as a repeat Junior and found success, i recently committed to college too actually! I am here for questions if anyone needs it!

How difficult would you say it is to transfer to Blair as a junior and do you have any idea what the odds of acceptance are?
