Hi all,

Is it significantly harder to get into boarding schools as a junior? Does it depend on the school? Thanks

Hi all,

Is it significantly harder to get into boarding schools as a junior? Does it depend on the school? Thanks

from what I hear on this message board thingy, it is. for all schools.
sucks for us!

much harder, much more competitive.
what schools are you looking into?

My son got into several schools as a junior. It is hard, but not impossible.

what were his stats (if you don't mind)? what was his.. "hook"? and what school? it would be very helpful.

Agree with above posters. Much, much harder to get in as a junior.

yeah iagree, unfortunately. lol nobody wants us! :P

I'm sure there are many schools that would want you. The trick is to figure out which ones.

He had a 93 percentile SSAT (no prep)- was coming from an emotional growth program (think "wild child")- his hook was that he was one of the best hs runners in the country. He got into a few schools- had good grades but not perfect- good writer- had some coaches pulling for him.

is it possible if I don't have an amazing hook like your son did?

Yes- it is possible. There are fewer spots, but also fewer applicants. There is ALWAYS some attrition at boarding schools- financial reasons etc.
We were told to NOT shoot for the very top tier schools like Exeter etc. because the attention you will get will be much less and you will be competing for college spots against kids who have been there more years and know the faculty better. A smaller school where not as many kids are shooting for the same schools was recommended.

I'm actually applying to top tier schools. I guess the least competitive in my selection is taft/choate, which is still very competitive.
Now I'm really worried, but it isn't the end of the world if I don't get in, I guess.

It depends how badly you want to go to boarding school. You might want to add some schools from the next tier down. You would be surprised how many great schools there are out there.

I would, but I'm not allowed to (especially now because it's way too late). It's either I get into the best or stay at my school because my parents think I can acheive as much in a second tier boarding school as I can in my school now.

How many people apply to get in to Andover for the 11th grade year?

10 this year out of 70 in milton..
so I guess a little more at Andover

msu-for the taft essay, are you supposed to write one essayw/ 2 topics or 2 essays w/ 2 different topics?

what was the taft question?
sorry i forgot

there were 4 topics (describe family, personal experience and its impact, what do you do best, describe favorite person)

oh okay. write 2 essays. I did family (because it was a milton question so i just recopied it) and the personal experience
