Thoughts on the following schools for a rising non-binary (they/them) 9th grader with very high functioning ASD 1 (took 3 evaluations to finally diagnose it), high IQ and poor executive functioning skills? Generally an A student unless they lose all their homework and then gets a C. Has anxiety regarding teachers and school after not being understood for years - understanding and compassion for ASD a must. Looking for arty, not sporty. Needs structure but flexible, not rigid. Hasn’t done well in the past with later study halls (730-930 pm). Feel free to PM. Thank you!
If 7:30-9:30 PM is considered “late” for study hours, you might have a problem. Most boarding schools expect that you participate in afternoon activities - usually sports.
Yes, even at the loosey goosey schools, you usually have afternoon commitments.
I would like to think that at most schools today being nonbinary won’t even raise an eyebrow, even at those schools that previously had a reputation for being a little stuffy. (Sorry GLADCHEMMS fans, those of us old enough to join AARP still have a tendency to recall you as being stiflingly conformist.) It’s just unsophisticated to be anything but accepting.
Therefore, focus on the academics: does the learning environment support your child’s learning style. How much structure does your child need? How much flexibility does your child need?
