Boarding school in south?

Hey guys,

I'm new to CC, and I'm in 7th grade. Currently, I'm considering applying to boarding schools. Could you give me any recommendations on good schools, especially in the West/South, since that's the place I'm interested in, that have good sports programs as well?

I don't know what West/South means. CA? I mention Woodberry
Forest but remind yourself that if you are a female they aren't gonna be interested.

How competitive are you? Can you give us your stats?

For boarding schools, in west, i would say: cate and thacher.

for south, i would say baylor or hockaday (if you are a girl).

I meant west and south. West as in California, Oregon, Colorado etc. And south as in Florida, Texas, Virginia, Tennesse, etc.

I have so-so stats. Practice ssat around 87th percentile, and do 3 sports, 2 clubs, A/B average.

http://www.woodberry.org/Default.asp?bhcp=1

Thanks for the clarification.

California has Cate, and Thatcher. Texas does not have any real bs. TMI in San Antonio, St. Stephens in Austin have a very small boarding population. Hocakaday (girls) in Dallas also has a very small boarding population. In Virginia there are a number of bs, co-ed, and single gender. Episcopal High School, Foxcroft, Madeira, Chatham Hall, Woodberry forest come to mind. Good Luck! http://www.boardingschoolreview.com/

Asheville School is excellent. Baylor in TN looks good.
STAY AWAY FROM ST. STEPHENS in AUSTIN. I can not emphasize this enough.
Also, do not look at Hockaday. It is an awesome school, but the boarding community is much too small. It is mainly for Mexican nationals to come up and study for a year at a time. There are also a few boarders from rural TX and LA towns.

Aweirdo, I concur with steering clear from Texas for bs. I have always heard that St. Stephens was very good, but apparently MOFWC will disagree. She does have a legit reason. Unfortunately St Mary's Hall in San Antonio discontinued their bs, because SMH is a great academic school.

St. Stephen's has a bad headmaster and the boarding community is struggling. The academic standards for boarders are MUCH lower than for day students. The boarders are mostly internationals and soccer/tennis academy kids. The place empties out on weekends because the athletes are away at competitions, and the remaining US boarders are from Austin and go home. A few of the dorms are absolute dumps. This information is my objective reporting, which would be confirmed by most people connected with St. Stephen's. Our personal experience was really bad, and not unique to our family. The college counseling is terrible, too, by the way (that reported to me by parents of day students).

Thanks for the advice. Here's the list I'm thinking of: Asheville, Baylor, Episcopal, Cate, Thacher, and Northfield Mt. Hermon (mom is alum there). Do you guys have any suggestions about these places?

Woodberry Forest (orange, VA), St. Anne's Belfield (charlottesville, VA)

Thatcher is a great school but you really have to love what you are doing there, it is very unique and not for everyone (the horse program in 9th grade, for example...).

Stevenson is another Calif. school to consider.

NMH has been on the decline. It is not in the league with the others you mentioned. It used to be wonderful, but it got too big and then they abandoned one of the campuses to try to get things under control. We looked at it for Wild Child but our Educational Consultant was not in favor of it at all.
Frank Shorter went there, so it has some good points!

I'm only applying to NMH because my mom is an alum and she would force me too. That's one of the reasons I'm considering Thacher: because of the horse program. But is there any big difference between these schools and good NE prep schools?

If you are looking for a good equestrian program, you may want to consider Culver Academy in Indiana. It is a more tradional (not western riding) program. Not sure what you are looking for. Excellent facility.

Oh, you'll be very happy at Thatcher then. You're probably one of those people it was made for. Good luck.

Thanks guys, for the input. So far, I think my first choices are either Thacher or Episcopal? How is Episcopal? There aren't much talk about here. By the way, when's the earliest we can schedule a tour and interview? I want to do it as soon as possible to get it out of the way and focus on other aspects of my application.

sierradoc, Stevenson looks AMAZING!!!

It's so beautiful!!

Have you seen the school in person?

Also, I tried to look up Pebble Beach on city-data.com, and nothing came up for it. What major city is it by?

Could you tell me some more information about Stevenson?

How does Stevenson compare to New England prep schools?
