you must realize that the secondary education in the UK is much different than in the US. In the last 2 years of their secondary education, students choose to specialize in about 2, 3, or more subjects, much like how you choose a major at US universities.

If your goal is to go to a university in the US than I would recommend that you go to school in the United States because the education systems in the two countries are not incredibly compatible. You'd have a much better chance of getting into a US college if you went to a high school in the United States.

I wonder what it would be like if I went to the boarding school in UK. X] Maybe I might get my accent or not. :P Why are you planning to apply there akjt?

http://www.prepreview.com/ should give you a list of the best preps in Britain.

This is not for me -- it is for my kids. Although my 1st s was accepted by a few good colleges this year, he is not very happy with his high school (private) for several reasons. He is strongly against my decision to send his young brother (my 2nd s) to the same school, which is the best in our region in terms of college matriculation.

Besides sending my kids to this high school, I have only one option: to boarding schools in UK. US boarding schools are simply too expensive for us. But UK boarding schools seem managable financially. However, I really don't have much idea about UK boarding schools. :( In particular, I worry if the kids will actually have less chance to be accepted by good colleges in US because of UK curriculum.

Maybe you could ask your son why he hated it. And ask your second son if he wants to go. If he does, then send him over there. It must be couple reasons why your first son didn't like it. :/

If you haven't done it already, definately sit down and have a family discussion about the pros and cons of your local private school. If your son feels willing to go, leave that as an open possibility.
