You are about to begin your first year at your first choice boarding school but have yet to purchase a notebook computer for use in schoolwork, music, and entertainment. What would be your laptop of choice, and why?

Mine would be the Apple MacBook Pro 15 inch - sexy, sleek, powerful, very portable, and beautiful in so many different ways. I could also install Windows onto a Bootcamp partition if I ever felt the need to run any PC software.

Apple designer progression:

Varsity computer team age 5
AP math crap Age 7
Hades Age 10
Carnegie Melon age 14
Grad School age 18
Devoted computer internship with apple age 24
15 years of practice.....

No other way they could have created such an amazing system.

We looked at college computers for my cousin(both are in their seniors years)... He wanted a mac because everyone has a mac(Originally he said that).

He said he wanted:
-Battery Life
-Compatibility
-Reliability(BIG ONE)
-Speed

Basically anything at 14 inches(screen size) was perfect. light and energy efficient

HOLY CRAP, I had no idea they came out with the new 17-inch macbook. That's what I'd probably get (if it didn't start at FREAKING $2799, overpriced as hell) since for gaming I'll just use my desktop, which is about 10x as powerful for a quarter of the price.

YOU STOLE MY COMPUTER!!!!! That's the one I'm getting. !!! I have the iMac 24 inch right now. I can't take it because the screen is too big. :( I wanted to get the macbook pro 17 inch, the one my sister has (she stole my idea! she used to be a Microsoft person)but it's kind of heavy. And the 15 inch is more compact, but I'm not sure how much of a difference 2 inches would make.

Why would anyone run bootcamp on an apple computer? Just buy a Microsoft computer!!! I think I'm just going to run Linux on a thumb drive though.

The macbook air doesn't have a dvd drive because you're supposed to already have an iMac or macbook. It has like no power whatsoever. It's like the iPhone, but not as portable.

Well, apple computers in general are more powerful than your average every-day computer, but far more horribly overpriced (imo, but if you're willing to spend extravagant amounts of money on them, be my guest).

You should look at HP computers, too. They can be really cheap, and just as powerful as any macbook.

And then there's Newegg, for all your computing needs. And other websites and manufacturers (like gateway's px series laptop)

Istoleyournose: Yeah, definitely. And it's so compact! But if I would only have one computer, it'd need to be something more powerful than that. :D

Nasafato: I just love apple though! Personally, I think it's worth it. Besides, my parents would already be spending so much, I don't think a couple of thousand would really make a difference at that point.

I really like the Leopard operating system. Also, the power's not that big of a deal. Albeit it costs more, I could just get an upgrade. It's also how amazingly beautiful the apple computers are. I mean they're so sleek and sublime. I also just like going to the Apple store in Pasadena. It's right next to Pinkberry! Anyone try the pomegranate flavored one yet?

Hey, also, I'm thinking about getting a macbook 13 inch instead. Because I don't think I need all the power of the 15 inch pro one, and it's much lighter. What do you think?

Well, I'm more of a gamer, and like my computers to be powerful. Because, frankly, I need all the processing power I can get. But the macbooks are great computers, I just wish they cost a lot less for what they're offering. All of them are fine (although I personally would prefer the larger screens). And since you'll probably be in boarding school most of the time, you'll have plenty of opprotunities to charge it. If not, then just buy extra switchable batteries with the money you save on buying a smaller macbook (one or two more and you're set for long plane rides to China).

And, yeah, I do love macs too, but as I said, I like my computers powerful. Macs just don't suit my needs. And I'd rather use the extra money you spend on Macs for a 30 inch screen (which is amazingly beautiful). But if you gave me 2800 dollars to spend only on a laptop, I'd get the 17 inch macbook pro.

Since you're probably not an avid gamer like me (though I don't have time anymore for extreme computer game playing, and will have even less at boarding school) you should get a Macbook, if you're willing to pay the money (and it seems you are).

The 13-inch is good. It's just smaller, and isn't as fast (but still far more than enough for the everyday use you'll most likely be putting it through). It really depends on what you want it for, though. Photo-editing and movie watching, the larger the screen, the better (until you get to the ridiculous size of 30" lcd monitors for movies).

.. erm, i know i'm coming off as completely clueless (i guess i am, when it comes to technology!) but why Mac laptops? why not .. microsoft? haha. just a question, please don't hurt me. i've never owned a laptop and i've always used microsoft so i'm rather unfamiliar. yeah, haha.
