Boarding School Supplies ('09)

there are always way to get them second hand. Thats the road im taking!

I have a book allowance from my scholarship, so I think I’m going to stretch that as much as possible with secondhand books. Do textbook costs exceed $800?

they might. my school said to have 1000 ready for textbooks, but i think they were estimating the highest possible cost of new books. if u buy used it will be less for sure!

Yay! I’ve already saved money on a power strip (I know, they’re cheap, but my grandpa -an electrician- gave me one) and a TI-84 graphing calculator (my mom’s boyfriend’s son used to be an architecture major in college and needed one, but now he’s going to be a sports announcer, so he gave me it). That’s $8 for the power strip and $150 for the TI84! Woo!

don’t forget an umbrella!

Hey, where are people going to get sheets/ duvet covers?
I’m not bringing all my bedding to BS because then I would have to bring it back again when I come back home.

I’m getting my bedding at Target- it’s cheap and really, really cute. I might even be getting it tonight!

Lucky! I love Target!
a lot of my friends like PBteen. I like a lot of their stuff but it’s a little expensive…

Yeah, too expensive for me, too. We’re all about the cheapness here, haha.

Check with Target or Bed Bath and Beyond and the like to see if you can order the bedding for pickup at a store close to school rather than carting it down when you go–and then look into storage options for the summer for anything you don’t need or want to bring back and forth every year.

Items that are expensive to ship home:

Most schools have boxes where, at the end of semester, you can leave things to be given to chariatry. If the sheets you brought to too expensive to ship home at end of term, just leave them.

Or make friends with a day student, who will store your stuff for free over the summer.

A 3-hole puncher maybe? And a stapler?
haha. And glue!
A trashcan too
And some students say you should bring some tissues especially if you’re going to a New England bs. winter = a lot of sneezing and cold. :P

Ahh 3-hole punch is a GREAT idea! Especially since I’m probably going to use binders. And a stapler too! Grrr I take so many things for granted at home.

i know! i will probably end up bring my own house to BS…

I got all of my bedding from PBteen- it is more expensive, but better quality. I got my duvet (the most expensive part) in white, so that I can keep that all four years and just switch out the quilt/blankets/sheets when I want to update the look. It justifies the cost.

i’m getting second-hand (or kijiji or whatever) PB duvet cover/shams, but Target sheets and stuff. Star Wars Duvet! YES!

very organized list!

Packing hasnt even occured to me at all yet, or really, any planning for boarding school except that I applied and was accepted. hah.I hope my school sends out some forms about what to bring!

Another thing I sent with my d that she found useful were ziplock bags. Very convenient.

Quarters! Lots of quarters for laundry. An umbrella, rainboots, and baby wipes (I am obsessed with keeping my hands clean!). All these little random things I keep thinking about as I go through my day, haha.
