How far away are you guys willing to go for school? I'm applying for one boarding school that's still in the state and another one on the boarder of the next state over. How often will I most likely be able to come home?

Ask your parents how often they are willing to make the drive round-trip twice (once to go pick you up & the second time to take you back to school). If visiting home frequently is a priority, then opt for a closer school.

Our S is an int’l student, and driving home is not an option.

I agree with GMT it just depends if home or education is the priority

I might apply to a Canadian school in BC, and I live near the East Coast of the U.S. Yeah it’s really far away, but I’m at least going to think about it.

I’m not trying to discourage you from considering distant schools. But if finances are an issue, you need to consider the cost of air travel. When schools in the surrounding area all have break at the same time, airfares are high (supply and demand).

The generic breaks when the dorms will be closed include:

Thanksgiving (for U.S. schools)
Christmas/New Years
Spring Break
Summer Vacation

You will need to count on travelling during these periods.

For int’l students the logistics of visiting home for school breaks can be daunting.

Umm… Im applying for schools almost halfway across the country…

I have to say that there are benefits to our daughter being only 2.5 hours away vs. 6 or 7 (both via car). It makes pickup/drop-off days a fairly easy one-day trip.

@ preppossibly,

Try getting home halfway across the world. The costs add up very big.
