How much of a factor is a dancer's body type (height, weight and shape) in auditions for BFA dance programs?

It completely depends on the school, the school’s director and their program.

For example, at Indiana University (Jacobs School of Music, Ballet Department), the faculty seems to prefer a more Balanchine body.

One of my DD’s friends said that Butler University “embraces annorexia quite well.” In other words, she felt the dancers there were extremely thin, lithe -ballet type bodies vs being athletic looking.

Having worked with the costuming for Butler Ballet for the last several years, I can attest that Butler’s dance department has all body types.

DD’s former teacher was Sugar Plum at Butler (not that long ago) and has an athletic build for a ballet dancer for sure. She also worked professionally post-college.

Of the more recent girls I know that went to Butler, they range from tall and thin to average build.
