Bonner Scholar E-Mail and More

Did anyone else recieve an email about the Bonner Scholars service-themed scholarship program? I didn't even do that much service in high school...

Also, I've recently recieved an email inviting me to audition for a music scholarship (I don't play in the school band either). Although I haven't recieved an acceptance package, should I take these emails as a sign that I'm probably in?

I also received an email about Bonner...it sounds right up my ally considering I already volunteer about 10 hours a week. I don't know if they sent it do all applicants or just those that they were really interested in? Let's hope it's the latter haha

anyone else out there know about Bonner?

yea i got one too and i'm really into all the community volunteering and activism

yup i got both of those emails, im first chair in the orchestra for cello and ive done a lot of stuff with my community...i dont know if it means we're in or not :/

My d got it too.

i also just received it.

my stats are at richmonds 75 percentile...

if anyone who had considerably low stats or other low "stuff" got this then i doubt it means anything but if everyone who got it had good stats maybe its a likely letter!

My D got it too. I have a feeling it only went out to those who qualify for the honors program, though. Just a gut feeling.

but do you think it means we are accepted to the school.. not necessarily the honors program?

Well, its just my opinion, but it would not seem right to me to encourage someone to apply for a scholarship of that type if they were clearly not going to be accepted.

hm i got the bonners but not the music one, i'm also a cello player

i also am above the 75th percentile...so it looks like maybe they only sent it to students they are likely to accept? are you guys all going to apply?

i'm assuming that if everyone got it, it doesn't really mean that much

Yeah, I got one too.
I got a 1400 on my SAT and the rest of my stats are top 75%.
Also, I am an Eagle Scout and expressed interest in service during the interview I had with an admissions director, so I don't know if it means that we are pretty much in, or they are just sending them to everyone who applied.
Does the scholarship imply that you have to do service in Richmond during the summer, or in your own community, because the site says something about a living stipend. (maybe I'm just missing something, but I would appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me)

"Provide access to a college education to students with high financial need. " This was said on the university of richmond's website, under the goals of the scholarship, I didn't apply for financial need, but I still got an invitation to apply, any comments?

i also didnt apply for financial aid. the program seems really competitive. i hear back from my ED2 school february 15th so if i get deferred or rejected maybe i'll apply.

I agree with Sunshadow that inviting people to apply for what is referred to as a merit based scholarship without having any intention to admit them to the school seems like a very unfair practice. However, that may be what is happening. I called the admissions office today and was told that having received the Bonner related email meant nothing in terms of being any indication as to ultimate acceptance to UR. Look at all the (possibly) false hopes that have been stirred up! Maybe someone at the school will honor us with a reply.

I'm also a bit confused about the criteria for the invitation. My d's statistics are at the 75% and some are above. But she doesn't have a lot of community service. She serves as an assistant dance teacher, does some fundraising dance performances, and babysits at our temple so parents can go to services. But that's about it.

The application, however, asks a lot about one's commitment to service, how the service activities affected you, who got you into community service, etc. It really doesn't seem to fit my d.

This doesn't give me the warm & fuzzies.

I know that one of the conditions of being a Bonner Scholar is that you must have applied for financial aid. So that might be the common thread here - if you all applied for finaid, maybe they automatically sent the e-mail? I know that one of the applications my S filled out specifically asked if he wanted to be considered for the Bonner Scholarship - I can't remember if it was Richmond or another college. He checked no because we didn't qualify for financial aid so he wouldn't have qualified for the Bonner.

I don't think I'll be applying for it. While I do more than my share of service, committing to a consistent 10 hours a week is an intense amount of time that I'm not really sure I'm even going to have. Its not that fantastic of a scholarship either...

Patsmom, I was asked to apply for the scholarship, and I did not apply for financial aid. But, I see what you are saying because the website says the scholarship is for candidates with a strong need for financial aid.
This scholarship offer has just confused me, why would they ask us to apply to something, that from what I have seen seems to pretty in depth in terms of writing, if we might not even be admitted. I guess I will email an admissions director and try to find out whats going on.
