My daughter was offered a place in this program for next year( she will be freshman). Are there any current UR students here that know about this program or are in it? It looks great and has financial incentives, but my daughter is concerned about feeling swamped by the time commitment; and how that may limit her trying other extra curriculars, like theater.

Our students are in exams this week, so I'm guessing that's why there haven't been any replies to this post. I'm asking around for what the feeling about this issue is, and I'll be back in touch about it before long.

I waited on answering to see if anyone could provide better information than me, because I'm not a Bonner Scholar.

BUT, that being said, I do have a good friend who is a freshman and is a Bonner and is also crazily involved in both the Department of Theatre and Dance and the University Players. He's also is a lovely UR tour guide, so perhaps UR Admissions know who I am talking about. He's busy, like just about everyone on this campus, but I get the feeling that he's is able to manage everything on his plate without being too overwhelmed.

If your daughter has any Theater-related questions, let me know! I'd be happy to either answer them myself or direct you to someone who can.

awesome- that is exactly what my daughter is concerned about being able to do activities and especially theater!!!!! and still do the Bonners- Are you a theater major or just an active participant? I think we might have met your friend if he sits at the front desk in admissions- was he from SW Virginia??

I know he's from VA, not sure where though. If he had reddish brown hair, you found the right guy :P

I'm not a major, but I've taken major-track classes and I've participated in just about every show since my freshman year, and I'm a sophomore just finishing up my last exams now.

i think I even rememeber his name but I won't post it here!

Are the shows pretty much open casting? Do upper classmen or majors get preference?

Could we have met you as well? My daughter sat in on an acting class a few weeks ago-if it was you , you were friendly and spoke to my d after the class.

The shows are entirely open casting. I am fairly sure I'm correct in saying that most of those involved in theater productions (at least of the graduating seniors) are not theater majors or minors. There is no major or upperclassmen preference--it's strictly whoever the director feels is best for the part. Shows are typically directed by faculty professors on a rotating schedule, with a musical every other year. Every year, the department also hosts one or two visiting artists who teach classes and have roles (either behind the scenes or on stage) in productions.

And no, you didn't meet me. I took my acting class first semester of freshman year (and it was a ton of fun! Your daughter should definitely take one!). But I'm happy to hear that whoever she spoke with was friendly :)
