<p>There've been a quadrillion threads about this - search "book awards". Basically, the book award is sponsored by an alumni group in your area. They give the book to your school, along with a list of criteria, and your school's faculty & guidance counselors pick a student that they want to honor</p>
<p>FYI, book awards mean that you stand out in your school community, but they're not official awards from the university or anything. In admissions it carries about the same weight as any other award from your school. In other words, don't go crazy trying to earn one - it's a nice recognition but there are far better things you could focus on.</p>
