Booking rooms for graduation - how far in advance can/should this be done?

Ds is Class of 2018. If we have a particular place we’d like to stay in Mountian View for graduation, how far in advance do we need to book rooms?

How would we know this hotel’s policies? Call it today and try to book. If they won’t book you now, ask them when the list opens and call that day.

@redpoodles - lol. Okay. We aren’t set on staying in this place. I was just looking for a general rule of thumb for booking rooms for graduation.

Agree. And jump on it. On our case, different college, as soon as our preferred hotel opened for this, it filled. And of course, for grad weekends, price can go up. Ask.

I called. Fifty weeks in advance. I’ll mark my calendar and call when that date hits. Thanks!

@Hoggirl Stanford guest house uses a lottery for commencement weekend. The deadline to enter is a year in advance.
While it might be difficult to get a hotel room in Palo Alto (any time not just during commencement), it shouldn’t be difficult to get one is surrounding cities. There are plenty of hotels in the area that are heavily used by business people during week days and relatively easy to get for weekends.

@CA94309 - thanks.

I was mistaken - our preferred hotel is not in Mountain View but in Menlo Park. Which probably makes it more popular. Got my “M” towns confused, I guess. We’ve never stayed at the Stanford a Guest House. Is the lottery worth pursuing? I’m thinking we may have grandparents attending as well, so it seems like going slight off-campus is better so we could all be together.

For June 2016 commencement weekend, I made reservations at our preferred hotel (a Best Western) in Redwood City the previous July and had no problem getting a reasonably priced room. For this year’s commencement weekend, rooms at the same hotel cost twice as much (when I looked last July)! However, I was able to find a fairly inexpensive room at the Comfort Inn in Palo Alto, which we’ve stayed at before. The room’s not as big, but it should be fine and it’s close by.

@Hoggirl The only advantage of the Guest House is the cost. The rooms are much cheaper than similar ones in Palo Alto.
